Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber announced on his video blog that he will pen a sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, the longest-running musical in Broadway history.

In a taped message, the Tony-winning composer says, “I’ve made a decision today that I will do The Phantom of the Opera sequel. And I have met with a couple people today who have persuaded me to do it, who I will not reveal, but it’s a very exciting day for me. . . It’s going to be very exciting, and I can reveal that it will be set in New York.”

Lloyd Webber had previously written "The Heart Is Slow to Learn," a song for a Phantom sequel. That song was unveiled to the public at the televised London concert celebrating Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday. Kiri Te Kanawa performed the ballad. The composer later dropped the idea of the sequel and chose to collaborate on the musical The Beautiful Game.

At one point Lloyd Webber had been working on the Phantom sequel with writer Frederick Forsyth. When the sequel did not come to fruition, Forsyth later released the novel “The Phantom of Manhattan.” Lloyd Webber did not mention during his video statement whether the sequel would be based on the Forsyth work.

The winner of seven 1988 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, The Phantom of the Opera became the longest-running show in Broadway history on Jan. 9, 2006. It surpassed Cats' record-holding run of 7,485 performances. The musical at the Majestic Theatre recently celebrated its 19th birthday on Broadway Jan. 26.

The musical, based on the Gaston Leroux novel, has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is directed by Harold Prince. Lyrics are by Charles Hart (with additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe) and the book is by Richard Stilgoe and Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad-ish idea?

I don't really love the idea, but it will make money, seeing as Phantom of the Opera was one of the best musicals ever. I still say eh though.

Well, if the same guy is writing it, it can't be all bad. It would be much worse if someone else was doing it.

*winces* Why does Phantom need a sequel? Ah well, whatever works for him. I just hope it doesn't ruin it.

I wonder if he's actually going to go through with it. It sounds like a fun idea, but at the same time a bad one...There are a lot of Phans out there who are really picky about the way things are done. A lot even get mad at the musical for not being spot on with the book. So that's the part I'm scared of.

On the other hand, it sounds interesting becasue I am a big fan of everything Phanatom of the opera, though I haven't read a lot of the other books besides the original. So we shall see, yup yup. The Music for the musical was really fantastic, but I wasn't to thrilled with the Woman in White or the Heart is Slow to Learn, but I'm picky.

I'm all for it if the intro goes something like this:

"JUST KIDDING! Christine wasn't such an idiot. She didn't pick Raoul/Ken. She picked the Phantom like she should have!"

Some hopes die hard. Very hard.

Seriously, I will definately see it--though I wish it'd be based on Angel of the Opera--Sherlock Holmes meets the Phantom of the Opera (it's a real book)

WHY MUST THEY RUIN EVERYTHING I LOVE!?!
/drama

i hope he does a good job, i really do. Phantom of the Opera is the first thing i ever saw performed live, and i've seen a TON of musical theater.
It's always been my favorite "musical".
I saw it for the first time when i was three, and it interested me even then :)

MASQUERAAAAAAADE!! Paper faces on paraaade....masqueraaade. Hide your face so the world will never find yooou!

Sorry. I have watched this so many times during Music class at my old school, and Masquerade was always my favourite song :P I dunno how he's going to do a sequel though...Christine is dead, and Raoul is all old and ugly, and I'm guessing so is the Phantom o.0 actually shouldnt the Phantom be dead?! He's like atleast 100, because the teacher was like 40-ish while Christine was under 20, and the teacher had rescued him as a girl =S I'm confused o_O I never understood that bit >.>
