You've got the right board ^__^

I love making home made frosting, but I'm afraid I do it by eye, so I can't give exact measurements. I'll do my best though.

I use powdered sugar, shortening, milk, and vanilla extract. And of course, you can add whatever food colouring you want to it.
Like I said, I don't know the exact measurements, I use about a half of a package of a standard sized bag of powdered sugar, several heaping tablespoons of shortening, a little bit of milk, and a tiny bit of vanilla. I mix it up, and if it's too thin, I add more shortening and sugar, if it's too thick, more milk.
Once it's the right flavour and consistancy, add just a little bit of food colouring (follow the directions on the packaging). Remember, you can always add more if there's not enough, but if your frosting turns out scarily dark.. there's not much you can do about it.

Also, this frosting is, in my opinion, the best tasting frosting ever. It's not too sweet (which is often a problem I have with store bought frostings/frosted cakes)

When I make cakes, I just make the icing out of icing sugar and water ;)

Though there's been times when I made icing just to eat it :P

Oh you people put me to shame, I have never made icing from scratch, I either use icing sugar and water or I completely cheat and buy the stuff ready made!! Or my usual trick is to pay someone else to make the kids b'day cakes......oh I am sooooo ashamed

Almost sounds like something my father would do.

Good luck with the cake. Remember to have fun, too. :D
