A guy, a girl, and a mule

All right, I actually (believe it or not) heard this one in church:

A man and his wife were celebrating 50 years of marriage. Now, as they lived in a small town, this was a pretty rare occurance, so a reporter from the local newpaper came over to do a small article.

"Well, sir," asked the reporter to the husband, "What's your secret to staying married so long?"

"Ahh...." the man said, "It all dates back to our honeymoon. We went on a trip to the Grand Canyon. My wife and I decided to go on one of those mule rides to the bottom of the canyon, you know? Well, we were going along pretty well when my wife's mule stumbled. I thought she'd be shook up, but all she did was lean over and whisper 'That's once.' into the mule's ear.
About halfway down, her mule tripped again. She leaned over and whispered 'That's twice.'
Then just a short while later, the mule stumbled a third time. My wife said 'That's three times.' Then she took out a gun and shot the mule in the head."

The reporter looked at the man and said, "Er...how did that help your marriage?"

"Well," The man replied, "I started protesting, but then she looked me straight in the eye and said, 'That's once.' "

Typically it is the male with the gun in that joke, and it's on a farm.

I feel very sorry for that man. My mother reply, "That's scary."
