.Hack//infection

Um. I need some help on .hack; I've just got Mia and Elk into my party, but I don't know what to do next! I've "hacked" the gate, but since Mia and Elk were so weak, I quit and went back to the town... should I just go to some random place until anything happens, or should I go to the new area (the hacked gate)? ^___^;

I've been at that point -- it's best to level both of them up a bit in a low-level random dungeon until they're about level 10+ each. Otherwise they'll get pummeled in the locked dungeon.
