I broke Neopets! o_0

Fri Jun 17, 2005 3:57 pm

Today I was updating my lookup with some CSS code. Nothing fancy, just a text box. Oddly, when I looked at my lookup, all my stats were gone. The very bottom part of them were displayed inside the text box, and the rest had disappeared. "Okay," I thought, "I screwed up the CSS. No problem; I'll go fix it." This is when things get really strange.

What the...

Everything on the site prefs page, including the update buttons, is gone. This includes the banner ad at the bottom and the disclaimer. The HTML code for the rest of the page is inside the text box. I tried refreshing or navigating away from the page and back, but the glitch remains. I guess my perfectly innocent (though probably slightly incorrect) CSS code broke the page. Unfortunately, there's no way I can change it, because the update button is gone!

Has this happened to anyone before? It's one of the strangest glitches I've ever seen. I've asked around on the Neoboards, and I seem to be the only person experiencing the problem. I'd really like to get it fixed, because I can't change any of the prefs at the moment, and my lookup is messed up. However, I'm rather enjoying the fact that I seem to have inadvertently broken Neopets... or at least one page. :D

I've had similar problems with Firefox when it comes to that with different forms like that. The best method is to go to IE and you can remove the code that seems to be acting wonky with the form.

Thanks, Rune. *adds a quotation mark*
Seems happier now. Although I've now realized that my lookup looks disgusting in IE. @_@

Well, that was interesting. The question is, was that Firefox being stupid or Neopets being incompatible? If it's Neo's problem, it really ought to be fixed, with Firefox having such a large market share and not everyone having PPT to save them.

Once I did something similar, breaking a forum, so I don't think it's a neopets-only thing :P

Or it could be a question of whether your code was "morally" bad... Firefox, at least in some cases, likes to use HTML coding the way it was meant to be used. I.e. Neopets' info that you get by hovering over items in IE doesn't work in Firefox (normally, you can download an extension that changes that). The code used for the hovering text is the alt="Text here", which is supposed to be used only if the image is not available. There is a separate tag (i dont' remember what) that is designed specifically for hovering text.

*whee ranting*

The tag for hovering text is: title="yourtitlehere"

it has happened to me too, and you must find the part of the code that made that mess in the first place like two div tags one after the other (if they are the same class or something)

Could you perhaps post the code here so we can take a look at it? Maybe that way someone will be able to figure what the actual problem is. 8)

CONGRATS ON BREAKING NEOPETS...hahah they deserve it for the war they snuck up on us

It turned out to be a missing quotation mark. But hey, it was someone else's code! :P

Edit: The great Snarkie says that if such a problem happens again, it can be solved by clicking the clear description or whatever link above the errant field. Of course, you'll lose your code, but it'll fix the page.
