Clothing - why??

Thu Dec 14, 2006 4:46 pm

I'm sure this is something that plenty of people have wondered, and I acknowledge that some people will say I'm whining about free stuff, which I have no right to do...

But a large number of these advent calendar prizs have me thinking...
Why does TNT continue to put out clothing?

It's useless. Our pets can't wear it. We can't wear it.
I think it'd be cool if we could make a little avatar of ourselves (sort of like the Mii you can make on the Wii, if you will, only cartoonier and probably less options) and wear the clothes we're given, but until something like that happens, what's the point?
TNT mentions sserver space and such as to reasons why certain things can't happen... what would happen if they slowly phased out all the clothing, if they're never going to do anything with it? Just think about how much space it would save, what with all the Pink Quiggle Scarves that could be turned into... I dunno, a food item or book or something, that would be eaten or read and disappear... freeing up ALL that space.

Now I'm sure people collect clothes, and this would put a kink into the galleries of such people... but really, does anybody here have any other ideas as to why they keep making items that cannot be used??

Quests. Since some faerie and other quests (and jobs as well) require these useless items, the demand for clothes remains.

Of course, TNT could always alter the request requirements so that clothes were no longer asked for, then phase the item type out altogether....

Jobs shouldn't be a problem, as they're easily thousands of other items on the site...
I didn't think of Faerie quests, but I'm sure there's other items they could search for, right?

Although you get an e-cookie, since I totally didn't think of that.

I agree...the clothes are totally useless. I wish we could get things we could actually use. What do you think the fire faerie would ask for in quests if clothes weren't around anymore?

Thu Dec 14, 2006 5:08 pm

I certainly have wondered that myself. Why bother? Why not delete them?!

The amount of work and server space that would be taken up by trying to make clothe-able avatars, human or pet, is mind-boggling.

As a simple example, the pink quiggle scarf you mentioned... would have to be different widths for tuskaninny necks, aisha necks, baby aisha necks, baby nimmos, tyrannian nimmos, and so on. Then, a regular blue scarf would have to be redrawn to fit each of those sizes as well.

So, you see... You'd have to have a separate image for each pet species, and for multiple pet colors because they are shaped differently (maraquan, tyrannian, darigan, baby for example)... for EACH clothing item. Not only would it take up server space for all those images, someone would have to DRAW them all.

And that assumes that you can figure out a way to show the proper item shape and overlay the item in the proper position for each pet shape.... you'd have to have a database entry for EACH clothing slot, on EACH pet (head, face, neck, chest, hands, legs, feet) that keeps track of which item they've currently got equipped and cross-references the item shapes with the pet color/shape.

Ack!!

I'm not dissing your idea, in fact it would be really cool! I am just explaining why I personally think there is NO way they'll ever do anything with the clothes, and I think therefore they should just give up and phase them out.

Hmm... *does some reseach*
Light faeries want collectable cards, Earth faeries want magic items, Air faeries ask for grooming items, Dark faeries want toys (why? so weird...), and Water faeries request books.

That leaves the following categories: food (which the clothes could be turned into), neohome furniture, neogarden items, school items (though I don't see why we keep those around, either, as neoschools went ker-plunk), collectable coins and stamps, gift items (which would help give those a purpose, other than sending them to friends for fun... seriously, has anybody ever used a tent??)... heck, there's a lot of options here. I didn't think of them without some fun exploring of neoitems, but it'd be fun to change up Faerie Quests anyway, to make the less useful (but still used, such as garden & furniture items) items have more of a purpose.

Edited to add:
The amount of work and server space that would be taken up by trying to make clothe-able avatars, human or pet, is mind-boggling.

Oh, no, I totally understand, and that's why I wonder why they still make them. The only way I could see them being useful is to make, like, a human avatar for you (Yahoo, I think, does something like this) that you could design, and use the clothes to decorate your person (kind of like... Gaia? Is that the place I'm thinking of? Human avatars of the same basic shape, so making different size items is less difficult, buy clothes and accessories...), it would kind of add the more "personal" touch with your pets... but would still take up loads of times and space.
But no, I totally agree with you that the idea of making clothes useful for pets (and even implementing my idea) would be astoundingly difficult, which is why I'd like to see them phase clothing out altogether... saving loads of space on the servers alone.

Actually, there are quite a few sites that do human avatars and it works great! Like you said, yahoo does it, MSN has Meegoes (sp?), and there's another one out there that is constantly advertised on MySpace and I don't remember what it's called off the top of my head.

That might be a cool addition to the userlookup...maybe...it's just an idea

*dodges the stones being thrown by those that design premade lookups and would have to rearrange their coding*

I'm not sure if I really care for that idea. Somehow, the idea of having human avatars in lookups seems like it would give Neopets more of a "kiddie" game feel to me. Might just be how I'm imagining it, of course, but I have to say I'm skeptical.

I always thought our Neopets could be representative of us anyways. I think anything "human-like," even in the form of avatars, would look out of place and detract from the actual Neopets.

Thu Dec 14, 2006 10:15 pm

I like the idea of human avatars, and I would want one. Unfortunately, I really doubt they'd do that--they've been getting rid of non-faerie humanoids on neopets for ages. Remember the old Edna and the old Island Mystic?

Changing things to different sorts of items makes the most sense, but it would require lots of redrawing,. Things are probably going to stay the way they are. :(

Some time ago, I had an idea about how clothes could be used in this thread, and also really liked Meer's followup idea on the next page. So I sort of combined the two and submitted them to TNT about a week or so after that. Who knows when or if they'll ever get to read it, but basically I said that clothes could work like toys or instruments.

If that's not feasible, then yeah, I'd rather just get rid of most of them. There's a few clothing items that I really like the artwork of, though, so I wish they'd come up with a way to "use" clothing before resorting to that.

But if they do delete the clothes, hope they delete the gifts, too. Those don't really serve any purpose either.

As for a Neopets human avatar, can't say I'm interested. There's lots of other places already that have 'em, and customizing it just becomes another thing I'll never get around to customizing because I don't have time. My first pet, I've had for over three years, and I JUST NOW created and uploaded a petpage for her.

yeah. I suppose y'all are right on that userlookup thing. It was just a suggestion :D

Maybe make them into neohome items for those who would be interested in making a "wardrobe" in their pet's bedroom? It would take a lot of recoding with all the clothing items out there all ready, I know, but at least one picture per clothing item would be enough instead of personalizing it for each species.

Hmmmmm... Although it might be really hard to get them scaled to the right size/proportion. How about people who want to display their clothes would buy a "wardrobe" or "closet" and place it in their neohome? Then it could be a separate, zoomed in area (almost like another room). It wouldn't be to hard to give us options like "put item in", "take item out", and make them 'arrangeable'. The only thing that would have to display on the regular neohome screen would be the closed closet door. What do you think? o_O

I kind of like the wardrobe ideam... at least, then you can do something with it.

:) I wasn't as fond of the human avatars as it seemed I was... and I agree that it would make things kiddy, and I don't think it would work for the same reason as already stated (they've phased out human-ish creatures)... it just seemed like the only idea for what clothes could be used for without taking up another 3 to 4 servers.

i definately wuldnt want a human av, a way to dress the neopets would be amazing, although very complicated as pointed out. i like the wardrobe idea tho - you could have two options for the clothes - hung up or strewn around the room!
