referralteam?

Wed Dec 20, 2006 8:38 am

I just got a neomail from a user "referralteam" which said this:

This is an email from Neopets to say thanks for participating in our referral program. You have reached 3 referrals!
You have been awarded 500 neopoints!

Remember to tell your friends about Neopets, and the new Neopets referral program!

Thanks a lot!
The Neopets Team

Now I know that it's not from TNT since the avatar was wrong (it was the default "neopets" avatar not the TNT one), and they don't neomail for referrals. Also, I've never referred anyone, so I know I haven't suddenly referred 3 people.

Anywho, my question is what's the point of this? It's not a scam, since they're not asking for anything dodgy, and while I did report the user for posing as TNT, I just don't understand the motive behind it? Seems like a lot of work to set up a new account just to neomail people with false referral statistics...

You can double check here: http://www.neopets.com/myreferrals.phtml just to make sure that you haven't referred anyone.

I have no idea though - it's been so long since I've referred anyone that I don't even remember the procedure.

EDIT: Though looking at the userlookup, it appears to be a user account. So I have no idea what's going on there o.O

A couple times, random people I dont even know have apparently used my username as a referrer. I get mails like the one you described, and then have to go check the link Alex listed to see who the heck it was.

o_o Holy cow, what an insane coincidence:

This is an email from Neopets to say thanks for participating in our referral program. You have reached 5 referrals!
A Tigersquash Mince Pie has neomagically appeared in your items!

Indeed, the pie is in my inventory without the 'user has given you an item' message in my item log, and the mail came from referralteam.

How very strange  Has anyone else received anything from them?

Wed Dec 20, 2006 8:52 am

Nope, no referrals!

The strange thing is that it's a user account, not an admin account, so I don't understand WHY someone would go through the trouble of sending me a neomail with false referral info on it without actually attempting to scam me.

People are very odd.

I am pretty sure the referralteam is still the default avatar - it is an automatic response and I don't think TNT have put the TNT avatar on that account.

I have had 7 referrals and none from anyone I know or anyone that has neomailed me to say that they have joined.

I did leave Neopets down as a favourite game site on one of my websites, so maybe that is where mine comes from.

As mentioned above, it could just be that someone likes you or the username and used it as a referral. o_O

The nmail isn't a scam and no harm will come to you or your account by getting these referrals.

But when you look up the user: http://www.neopets.com/randomfriend.pht ... ferralteam it's clearly not a TNT account.

I'm stumped. This is very weird.

Why do you say that?

TNT do not need to do anything with the account - there are no monitors on it, so it wont say that. It is just an empty account that can be used to send out nmails.

I am sure that is the same account I checked out when I had my referrals.

It is weird, but that account also doesnt have a date last logged in. That usually happens after about a year of inactivity. Since its given out neomails recently, it seems to do it automatically without anyone needing to log onto the account. TNT is also pretty good at getting rid of accounts with obvious TNT related names. Referralteam has sent out those neomails for a long time. Im sure they would have frozen them if it were truly a scam.

All the neomail I've received about referrals has been from theneopetsteam, but then again they've been from two pending accounts that haven't fully joined yet since they're still on their free trial.

I will, however, say that since neopets has said many, many times that they only use theneopetsteam for any and all neomail communication, the account is not going to be official.

Are you talking of Premium membership with the Free trial?

Referrals are different and they do come from the ReferralTeam.

Ah, it must be getting late, sorry for my confusion :)

We should suggest that they add something to the lookup and change the avatar to the TNT one, so people don't get confused in future. It'd be helpful. :D

It is a TNT account. I've gotten neomails (and prizes) from that account often.

I would have thought that too.

Who knows!?

Still, as long as they are not taking anything from you, requiring a response, or telling you to do anything.... who cares!? Free stuff, yay!
