Item ID Scam?

Fri Mar 23, 2007 6:33 am

I recently received this Neomail:
Hi there; I'm with the help site Neoitems and was wondering if you could help me out. I noticed you have the item Silver Heart Charm Bracelet in your Trading Post lots. To add the item to our item database, we need the item's ID which the following link will help you find http://www.neopets.com/~Air Your help would be very much appreciated! Whether I hear back from you or not, thanks very much for your time.

Is this for real? Somehow it doesn't seem right to me. I went to neoitems and the Silver Heart Charm Bracelet is listed there.
Can an item be stolen if you give out an item's ID?

Thanks,
Blue

Well, it isn't a scam, that's for sure. Item ID is universal. Every item has its own ID number in the Database, and each "copy" of that item has the same ID. This is why TNT can easily go in and change an item's name.

This isn't a scam! I am a staff over at Neoitems and we really do need those ID Numbers to activate the items in the database.

We usually just get the ID Numbers from shops, but if its a rarer item, it doesn't show in the trading post or galleries.

Perfectly fine, and if you'd like to feel calmer about it... I was asked by NeoItems for the ID of Pepper Chia Pop since I'd just rs'd one and I still have it and my account after getting the ID number to them. Item ID is the number for the item in its entirety, not your singular posession of one of that item.

Thanks everyone. The email just seemed a bit odd. My first thought was about cookie grabbers if I followd the link. After reading the replies above, I went ahead and sent the ID. Neoitems is a great site, and I am glad I could add a little info towards it!

Thanks again,
Blue

Yeah, just a thought though - they should have some little notice reminding people that the ID is universal, just so people don't freak out momentarily. ;)
