Same old scam

Mon Apr 02, 2007 4:56 am

You'd think people would know better then to try the old scam of 'go to this site you could become a neo Admin' yet they still do it. I reported them. But I had a question. I was going to check on this persons neopage and see how long they had been a member and such but then i decided not to because i was worried they may be able to swipe my info.... So does anyone know?

btw if someone feels up to checking it out the name the neo mail came from was briab101 PLEASE if anyone checks this be CAREFUL I dont want to be responcible for anyone having damage done to there account.

Yup sadly, there are still people who try to scam others, and sadly there are still people who will fall for it. I think TNT should emphasise the danger of scammers a bit more when somebody makes a new account, and have a little mini presentation about what to look out for.. would probably help a lot of people.

The problem lies in 'how' they could achieve that.

I got a similar neomail over the weekend. I don't remember the user, because I deleted the mail right after I reported it, but I don't think under that username you gave, Rubywinged.

Which indicates that either multiple people are doing this, or this person is switching accounts to keep doing this. :/

Have you tried checking it when logged out?

Bad idea. Most of those pages have cookie grabbers, so they will get your info, even if you are logged out.

I get

ERROR : Sorry, nothing with the name 'briab101' exists. Please try again!
Could TNT have resolved it that fast?

Trying to log into it gets this:

"This account has been FROZEN for the following reason:

This account was found to be linking to a website which asks for users' passwords."

So I assume so. :)

Wow TNT must really be on top of that stuff. Either that or that person was mass reported....

Personaly i just dont get WHY people would bother. I mean yes neopets IS fun but it's just a game. What do you get by cheating? What is the fun in that? It's not like you are going to get any real cash or something from playing...

humm but there is an idea.... TNT should work out some type of game that you could like get a cupon to Limited Too to get a free something or other...... that would be a REAL nifty thing. Something like "the first thousand people" or something so as not to get to many given away.... doubt that will ever happen tho... and I've totaly let myself Tangent off topic sorry!

Is there any way to know if a site uses cookie grabbers? Can they get your password this way? I had no idea that this could happen. *is lucky to have never been scammed*

Usually you don't know if a site has a cookie grabber until it's too late. But the source code may give it away (but it'd be a little late for that).
