Yeah, I can't really argue with the av. I mean, people "could" argue that since they didn't know about the McDonalds giveaway, they should get the av they gave out. Or... everyone should have a chance to get that cool battledome weapon or neoschool item that other guy got from his rare item code. It's just another merchandising scheme, if you want to look at it that way. Everyone does it. Free toys in cereal, a gift in your Happy Meal. Welcome to the modern American economy.

I think that's what people are arguing over the fact that "theoretically" (and I mean theoretically as obviously others have got it from friends and such) it is something only those in America have the opportunity to get.
I don't think the issue is that you have to get a game to get the Avatar I think its an issue of
opportunity - the people who live outside the States, don't own mobiles, don't have the money, etc aren't even given the opportunity even though they may be willing to pay for and get the game.

So what happens if you have to pay to get the next new pet?
You don't HAVE to use the new pet to play. How's that any different from some of the games that have elitist functions that only people paying $30 a month can use.

Bno (heh almost called you Robin! ^_^) makes a really great point about the avvie coming free with the game. Yes, only a specific group of people can get it... unless they're crafty enough to get it some other way. It's really the same with other ones, only there's not the whole money factor involved. Each has a target group. On the whole, there are "rich person" avvies, avvies for people who are good at games, avvies for restockers, and unfortunately avvies for people who have spiff new cell phones that want to pay $4 for a game.
Is it just me or did I say the exact same thing BEFORE it?

What you have to remember, is they are charging you for the game, to actually buy something. They are just giving the icons away free.
This is like the neopet codes they gave away with their merchandise a while ago (Do they still do that?)Neopets know that some people will just download the game for the icon, this is where neopets are being clever. But still, the icon is a free item that comes when you buy the game

No It's not!
Any of those items people could buy with neopoints within the site. There's alwasy a way for people to get them without having to buy neopets products and pay actual cash money.
With an avatar you can't sell it. So this really does effectivly keep some people off the avatar high score list. Which is why I think it is significantly more unfair something that would give you an item.
Although the point was made that the space fairy avatar is also like that. I suppose that's true, I hadn't realized there was a space fairy avatar. I didn't mind having her as a chalenger for "purchase" becuase having her as a chalengar didn't give you anything but the oppertunity to fight her/get on her highscore list. Which dosn't really affect partisipation in competitive activities.

I do live in the U.S., I don't have a cell phone, so no avatar. I wouldn't get the game even if I did have a phone, but that's just me. I do think people have gone avatar crazy though. No, I'm not a huge av collector. I think I have around 50 secret ones.
What's sad about this avatar are the lengths some people have gone to to try to get it, offering people np, items, etc. if they would give them a code so they could enter it and get the avatar. I think that's going too far, technically it could be considered theft as the person given the code didn't pay for the game, and yes it is against the rules. There were freezings both on the part of people getting and entering the code and if they were found on the board or neomail, the person selling or giving the code to others.
Kind of like the really expensive (faerie queen doll) avatar and the borrow/lend boards that pop up. People scamming, trying to get a "pool" going which almost always ends up with too many losing out, the people "lending" and asking for a fee or tip.
Maybe what's needed is a break from these super rare, super expensive avatars. I mean, they are just little pictures. The boards were actually better before the secret avatars arrived. With these avatars has come jealousy, greed, frustration, anger over "unfair" avatars. Not to mention some unwanted attention to the people who are on the high score list or who have a rarer avatar.
