Yuck!! Thanks for the screenies, Yixzy. No wonder the screen looks out of alignment for Premium - that second screenie with the big square ad is horrendous.

The ads are really not bad, even if you don't have premium, as long as you DO have Firefox. I installed AdBlock plus and NoScript into my browser. Not only do I not get any ads -- I've finally found the source of the endless cookie grabbers SpyBot finds on my computer. Not shocking to discover that they were coming from Neopets "sponsors."

It's worth it to download Firefox (it's free)... and really easy to install the add-ons.
I already have Firefox and have found it to be a superb browser in its own right as well as being highly customisable. However, I don't have any extra scripts running on it besides the Neopets toolbar and a few simple skins that change its appearance. Be careful, as I heard that TNT were at one point tracking users who were using the Greasemonkey add-on... it's possible they won't like users blocking their ads.

*looks at screenies* EWWWW. At least those aren't on every page - together with the unremovable modules on the left, they must squidge the page right up. How about time for a shameless plug?! *stares at own signature* :D

Seriously though, cookie grabbers = BAD. :x Sponsors shouldn't be allowed to put those on players' computers.

And Yixzy. Your pet is dying of hunger. It is a Ghost pet. This amuses me. :P

It's not greasemonkey that blocks ads. It's Ad Block plus. At one point they stopped you from being on the site if you had greasemonkey running, right?

I'm not really sure. But I'm still pretty sure it isnt used to block ads.

Does anyone know how to block the NC Mall and Video links? I blocked the images themselves but I want the links centered back on the bar.

Well, this has been somewhat of a hot topic on PPT.

Here is the topic that was started regarding Greasemonkey.

If you don't feel like clicking the link (the link hysteria going on right now) here is a quote from the thread that should help:

Quote:
can't use the shop wiz. Neo keeps blanking the page and flashing "You can't use Greasemonkey with this page" even if I disable greasemonkey and then reload (I actually see part of the wiz image loading before they block me from it). Apparently they expect me to uninstall it.

(For non-firefox users, greasemonkey is this little extension to manage userscripts. For example, mine monitors gmail and prompts me if it thinks I forgot to attach something in my email, etc.)

I'm emailing them now...

EDIT: okay, so it's their site & all, but they could have at least announced it or something...

Without wishing to turn this into a Greasemonkey discussion thread, it's an add-on you can get for Firefox that lets you customise websites to your taste by running scripts you can write or download. There is one script for Greasemonkey that can be used to enhance Neopets, making parts of it easier to navigate, amongst other things - it's debatable whether anything that script can do could really be called cheating, but regardless, Neopets didn't like it. Their reaction was to freeze some people and prevent ANYONE with Greasemonkey installed from using the shop wizard - even if Greasemonkey was disabled or they weren't running the Neopets script.

The reason I mentioned it in this thread is that TNT might make a similar decision about ad-blocking browser add-ons and decide that they count as cheat programs. Or they might not. I just wanted people to be aware of the possibility.

I seem to recall that one of the points that angered people about the Greasemonkey thing was that Neopets was exploiting a glitch in Greasemonkey which made it detectable. Without that glitch, Neopets wouldn't have been able to tell users had it. If that's true, they shouldn't be able to tell if adblockers are being used unless the adblockers have a similar glitch.

They've made it a point in the past that ad blockers though not appreciated are not cheating as they don't give users any kind of advantage over other members. That's debatable if you're on dial up as you'd have to download the ads as well but I don't think they count that. With greasemonkey able to alter scripts it was seen as a more likely candidate for cheaters and they blocked it. I don't use it and never have so I don't know the specifics of how greasemonkey works from the supposed cheating accusations made by Neopets.

I actually quite like the little pet images on the boards. :) Not that I go there much, but I like showing off my pets (and showing off the fact that they're cool without the need of mall clothes XD ) And I like to see other people's pets.

As for the ads, yeah, they look awful. *hugs adblock*

Arg, I wish I knew. I tried for a ridiculously long time to figure out a way to center the links with the mall and video links blocked, but to no avail. :( I finally got tired of looking at that awkward blank space and unblocked them. >.<

Yeah I unblocked the images themselves too. I'm use to it now I guess, so there's no real need to block them anymore.

Um. That is REALLY weird.

Because, I thought the whole point of the second Neopets login page was so that scammers couldn't fake that page... because it showed your active Neopet (which no-one would be able to figure out).

My thoughts exactly. This'll make it a fair bit easier to slip a specific user a fake login page. Why don't TNT ever run their new plans by a couple of users? It's like the pound strippings. If they'd just run this by a couple of regular users they'd be able to preemptively fiddle around with it so it can't be taken advantage of.
