(Continuing the thread about a notification thread from the last split...)

Daze wrote:...this thread is for everyone to participate in not just for those who don't wont to watch for the Alert button to go off.
When'd I ever say that I wanted to hijack this thread?

Gondra wrote:I think it would be a waste of time someone creating a new board everytime tarla was "in the building"...

Sorry for taking some luster away from the gold star, Gondra, but I wasn't talking creating a "new board" for each alert (which would probably indeed take too much time). I was talking about one single thread (board) in which there is exactly one post for each time someone sees the alert go off. Heck, you could post something just containing "asdfasdfasdf", and then edit the post to something that makes sense after the e-mail is triggered.

The nature of the "game" is that when you're browsing, you notice the Alert button going off and then click it to get an item. I understand that it's really rather serendipitous, so it's not like I'm expecting anyone else to do more work "for me". (I'm definitely not asking for anyone to stand guard watching the Alert button or anything more than what's going on already...)

Or, to put it another way: after someone notices the alert and gets the prize, they could choose to alert others or not. It appears some people would choose to not alert others, but that's, of course, okay. I would assume that people who post "Tarla is up!" in this thread are indeed trying to alert people.

As for comparisons to the MP, the MP is much more of a competition than Tarla, and if you help people win the MP, you lose money. By contrast, if more people win a Tarla prize, you lose nothing and gain that warm feeling you get after you've helped people. Again, if people don't wish to participate, they don't have to.

Let me make the chain of events clear, so people don't keep thinking I'm asking for something out-of-this-world:

  1. Someone creates the new notification thread
  2. Persons A. B, C, etc. subscribe to the thread (via the "watch this topic for replies" link)

    Tarla is set off...
  3. While browsing, Person A notices the Alert button, grabs the prize, and wants to tell others to grab it too
  4. Person A posts to the notification thread as soon as he can
  5. The phpBB software sends "someone has replied to this thread" e-mails to everyone other than Person A
  6. Everyone's systray e-mail notifiers pop up, and Person A has done what he wanted to
  7. Persons B, C, etc. may (or may not...) get the item

    After Tarla is over...
  8. Persons B, C, etc. go back to the notification thread in order to tell the phpBB software "Yes, I've seen the new replies, give me another email on the next reply."
  9. Person C (or whoever) catches the alert.... (repeat)

I continue to believe the chain of events will happen quickly enough for it to be useful - I mean, the only places where delay would occur is at step 4, unless you have a pretty bad systray notifier... experiment, anyone?

Also, hopefully, you can see why a different thread would be necessary due to step 8, because without a different thread, one would need to reset way too many times due to getting notified of discussion posts too. I'd rather check PPT once per day (I'd work much more efficiently) instead of every time this thread is posted to.

[edit] mark the rapid-fire events
[edit2] note the current problem with subscribing to this thread
[edit3] spelling "definately"

Sorry AySz88, it is just too much to read through.

If you have this thread watched, I am sure you will get the same result.

I have posted today that Tarla was available. You must not have been online and missed it. Sorry. :)

Tarla's back!

Mon Aug 28, 2006 4:37 am

I really don't think the Tarla notification thread would work as well simply because Tarla is only "in the building" for 3 or 4 minutes at a time. If it were longer, it would make sense. But personally, I don't even get the notifications until a few minutes after the post is made... which would probably mean that by the time I get the alert, Tarla would be gone.

Was she really? Usually someone else posts by now if she was. Clarify the item that you win (edit it after if the intent is for quick note).

Either case, Please take note that false notices will ABSOLUTELY NOT be tolerated.

She was back just recently, I didn't get whatever she was giving away but I did see it flash.

I finally got something (the stamp) First time I was online when she came. I would have prefered the plushie few days ago, but well, it's still around 3k in wiz so better that than nothing :)

I've got my item earlier today... I'll check the name on english, because I only know it in portuguese. But she was here a few minutes ago. I only wanted to warn others...

Check back, I've posted a few warnings before, and everytime other people also posted. It is not my fault if they didn't now.

Edit: Guess some people already confirmed it... But don't worry, this is the last time I do it... People can always check for themselves.
Edit2: Only because I don't have a lot of posts, it doesn't mean that I don't follow the discussions in the forum, or that I'm not relyable. I just don't feel confortable most of the time, because I'm afraid of the reactions I'll get from people. I'm usually afraid of getting a reaction like yours. Guess I'll spend another month without posting here.
Edit3: I usually don't put the name of the article because, like I said before, I only know it in portuguese. To post the name, I would need to change the language of neopets to english, go check my inventory, then copy-paste the name here, and then change it back to portuguese. A little too much trouble to warn others.

Its ok. I just want to make sure and clarify for others about doing such things. And it was just a little fishy, I'm sorry if you feel scared but I need to be sure.

I never meant to imply that you are unreliable either. A post count is nothing. It is merely a number under your post.

You shouldn't be afraid of posting... seriously. I apologize if I hurt your feelings, but the fact you posted just that without the item got me questioning. I understand your situation now. But you have to see what I need to look out for. Again, sorry. Don't be afraid to post!

No problem :) It's just that I'm not a big fan of posting, and I always try to post things that I'm sure that won't cause any reactions... So I was I little scaried with your reply... Yeah, I'm a chicken...

Well I've caved and installed the toolbar on IE as well, since it's pretty much useless on firefox. Not that it matters, since every time the alert's gone off, I've either been out, or in bed.
Bah!

that's what i've been doing.. IF i see it flash, i click on it, click here to post that she's come, then as soon as the page loads i edit to add the item to my post (i'm on dial up so it's the fastest way for me)

It flashed yellow, but all I got was

You've found the Alert button!

We've added this feature to the toolbar to keep you informed of random and special events! If you see the orb glowing be sure to click on it as soon as possible.

-TNT

hmph

I just now downloaded the toolbar...and I got the same thing...
"You've found the Alert button!

-TNT"

And I've tried reading through this thread and am so confused! So do we click on the alert button before it flashes...or after. Do we post it while it's flashing or only when we win something. And how often does it happen and how long does it last? Is it only once a day and does everyone get it at the same time?
