Never thought of it either, I can never remember when I adopted my Red Shoyru (Now a Starry Poogle) from the pound and the one I created was made on Christmas Day in 2002. So, I just ignore them.

I forget both their birthdays and their species days, but I make them celebrate my birthday.

No so far, but I've sort of decided to celebrate my oldest pet's birthday by painting it...? Not sure, though.
