When someone would auction off a Neopets account, items, etc, eBay would cancel the auction and report the persons IP to Neopets.
I read that somewhere, but I'm not sure exactly where.

Unlikely that IP addresses would be "reported" as many people have a dynamic IP - ie it changes everytime they connect.

IPs are also shared for people who play when they are not at home or use ebay when they are not at home.

So not a reliable indicator of a user.

My daughter plays World of Warcraft and she says that it is a common occurence for people to sell their gold for actual money. I am amazed.

Presumably the T&C of the site allows it?

I never checked into their T&C. I imagine it does. I was just amazed that people were selling their gold to one another because to me that means that Little Richie Rich could easily have advantage over Mr. Real Life Poor Guy. And, I don't know, to me that just doesn't seem fair. Why play a game in which the person with the most real life money wins?

T&C of WoW actually do not allow it, but the game has such a huuuuge following, that selling your gold is somewhat easy to get away with. Other than that, it's impossible to violate the T&C any further and it will most likely get you arrested.

Yes indeed. WoW doesn't allow selling gold or items or even characters for real money. That didn't stop my friend from making a nice sum of money from selling gold, though. You'd be amazed at how lazy some people are, that they'd rather pay for money than work for it. *Shrug* As for catching the sellers, WoW's got so much things to worry about (like bots) that I don't think they've got that time to be banning gold sellers, though they do do it. And as whatisthis has already mentioned - millions of people play WoW. It's probably pretty hard to find perpetrators.

And might I just mention that there are INDUSTRIES that revolve around farming for gold and selling the gold for real life money. Industries. *Nods*
