Do you have an online journal or something like that where you've posted stuff like your real name and friend's names? It's amazing how much you can learn by reading someone's journal. Once a random person (who found my IM name on this site) contacted me, refused to say who he was and started saying really weird and borderline offensive things, so I did a search on his IM name, found his LJ, and started asking him about his hamster and his trip to Mexico and his grades and stuff -- totally freaked him out.

I'd bet it's someone who uses the same library as you, though. I didn't know about all that stuff Ixistant said, but it makes sense. I'd avoid using public computers to play Neopets from now on.

same thing happened to me once, he knew things that i never posted on the internet even, and the day after that a friend at school admitted he did it...

i would just ignore them, nothing really can happen...

well, I logged off when I deleted my cookies.

Hyn, first off, I need to ask you a question. Are your local library's computers linked together using the one server? If so, then that may be your problem. 3 years ago, I was on neopets in my primary school and I logged on. Once people had seen me on the site they went to it on their computers and they were logged in as me. Luckly, one of my friends was on it next to me and realised they were on as me and I poromptly logged out. This has made me realise that if you are logged in on one computer, then you are logged in on all the computers who share the same modem or server. So that .ccy person could have done it if they were at the library at the same time as you.

well, At the library, the computers share an IP, that's all. You can't be on someone else's account on a different computer.

Something similar happend to me not long back.

I just kept on getting abusive neomails saying "ArE yu g0in 2 sEnd da pet? HUURRTYYY!!111" and "HuRRY n giv me da account or i will r3port u!!11"

Some of the people the guy had targeted had been my neofriends so they told me the username. Aparently according to many other people (Some who had actually fallen for this scam) he was claiming to be me. He knew my other accounts name with decent pets in (Which was quite scary) and had been making dung trades and getting people to bid on it for my account.

So I collected the info and sent a report. I then written on my userlookup that my account and pets are never for sale. At least that way if someone ever say's they are people will know they're not me.
I was just worried about my account and people thinking I would be a scammer.

Either this guy knows you in real life or is the former PPTer who is upset with you. Maybe you should do some snooping about to find out who he is.

And, one more thing, why haven't you blocked him already?

Tue Jul 20, 2004 10:32 pm

I blocked him yesterday, but when he hacked my account yesterday, he must have unblocked himself.

Tue Jul 20, 2004 10:34 pm

Oof. That guy is freaky. :o Defentally block him again.

First, I agree it's either someone who knows you in rl or someone somehow via ppt (could be a lurker, could be someone you talk to, had an argument with, whatever...) I think it's people you know for real personally.

On the off chance it is someone from online, Ihave to say you have alot of personal contact information under your name here on the forum, your website, yim, aim, email. You might want to consider removing some, if not all of that. I know, makes me sound very anti-social or paranoid, but I truly believe there are people who are out to get us (especially after my roommate's email got hacked and her cc info was used for a shopping spree).

Your forum name is your neo name (never use the same name or password for anything, that's my motto and the motto of many much more computer/security savvy people than me).

This person keeps contacting you and you haven't blocked/reported for harassment.

You CAN be logged into the same account on 2 computers. Others have posted confirming this (I've never done it, but had heard you could). The only way to log another person off is to change the password. Yes, you logged yourself out at one point by clearing your cookies, that is something you should always do anyway no matter what site you've been to. Especially if you're using a public library.

The computers at the library are networked, apparently. So if this is someone you know (which is what I think), all they need do is be at the library when you are, wait til you're logged in then log in using your name and bingo! Sounds more like there's a couple of people playing with you - one to steal your stuff, and one to neomail you - harassing, freaking you out and distracting you. That's a variation on a really old (but still effective unfortunately) real life pickpocket scam.

Last drastic measure, and one I never even suggest unless there's no other option because it's a total pain -- self-freeze to protect what's left, report to TNT whatever you can, including all these neomails from this person, what's missing, and any information about yourself that you can give them - what trades you had, bank, pets, nf, guild, what's in your sdb, etc.

You've got to do something, this is just a bad situation all the way around.

How about we get some people on PPT to talk to this person and find out more about them? If they are a lurker, it won't work at all. Personally, I'm frightened of doing so. Any braver souls?

No way I'd talk to this person, especially not on the site. Knowing me, they'd say something to set me off and instead of deleting/ignoring/reporting (if bad enough) I'd get all :x and end up losing my account.

Hyn, I have a question, and please don't take this the wrong way. I'm just curious. I looked at that screenie again of the neomail and note the word fu...now I know what it could mean, but that word is also Chinese for Luck or Lucky...as in milked you, I'm lucky? Do you know anyone who is or speaks Chinese? Feeling like a second rate Sherlock Holmes here.

As far as being hacked, if this is in fact someone you know, this happened because you were using a public computer and that person (or persons) logged in after you onto your account, that would not technically be a hacking per se. But it is stealing, no question about that. Especially if they went into your account and unblocked themselves and given the fact that YOU can still access the account. That kind says to me they don't have your password, or if they do it's because they have gained access to the email you use for Neo and they keep writing using that email and asking for the password - then yes, you WERE hacked indirectly.

Get a new email addy, make up a really bizarre password for that and for your neo account (and anything else you use that email for). Don't use the same email service either. If you use Yahoo, use I don't know, gmail, or make a new s/n on your ISP and use it just for Neo.

Not me. I am frightened of doing so also.

I suggest you create a new account and slowly move stuff from the old to the new. The hassles just aren't worth it.

EDIT: And everconfused is right about the Chinese. If you check out his shop there are several chinese letters (words?) in his HTML. Do you know anyone who plays Neopets and who is also Chinese?

actually, I'm chinese, but I don't think that Fu means luck. I thought he meant "F. U."

Tue Jul 20, 2004 11:36 pm

Hyn, well yes, that was the other way I thought to take that, but Fu, Lu and Shou are the 3 Chinese Gods of luck, happiness, long life and I've been told that fu can be used as a "short" version of luck or lucky. No, I'm not Chinese, just love the culture.

Morningstar, there is in this person's shop? Hmmm, interesting.
