About the "naughty" ads and possibly even the Marapets one...
There is spyware out there, called adware, which can infect your computer just by browsing to a site with it. The adware in question basically replaces all banner code on any HTML you download with banners, with ads from its own sponsers. This adware is not only annoying, it impacts the companies whose ads were covered over, it brings bad press to family sites who are not at fault, and in some cases, can expose minors to pornographic advertisements.
Check your computers for spyware and adware ASAP. My recomendation is to use Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Also, please report the ads in question, with screenshots, to the Neopets team.

Magica: That assumes they haven't downloaded Kazaa, or a multitude of other programs on the market, that come bundled with adware and spyware. Much of the time, it's not even mentioned that a program is bundled with anything else, until you install.
Bonzai Buddy and Gator are perfect examples. Those are notorius spyware programs that can seriously compromise your computer's security.

Except I'm on a Mac and therefore it (at least the marapets one) couldn't have been caused by adware.

2 screenshots I've wanted to take, but am too inept to do:
