I tried it, but all of them were taken....

The pets listed in the Adoption link aren't already in the pound. Their current owners are holding onto them until they find a good owner to transfer the pet to. So, you have to send a Private Message to the person who is putting their pet up for adoption. Then wait for that person to get back to you. Then set up a time when you are going to do the transfer.
