There are two realities coexisting side by side in Neopia. One is where Neopets are cuddly but smart animals, owned by humans. The is the reality in most games and in all interactive portions of the site. (This is the more strictly no-romance category, I believe.)

The other reality is where Neopets are anthro beings who live with their families and humans don't exist. This is the reality used in plots and in the Story Telling Contest. (This category is also no-romance when it comes to user stories, but TNT does include marriages and stuff in their plots.)

Articles and stories in the neopian times can be part of either reality.

Anyway, I enjoy the fact that there are different 'layers' to neopets. I was wondering how other people envisioned the world of neopia.

Normally, I tend to think of neopets as being the pets of humans, because that's how we all interact with them. Yes, they're sapient and could probably do just as well on their own, but they live with us because they want to.

I like the idea of anthropomorphic pets being one of their legends, but I hadn't really given it much thought until you posted this.

I would put "a bit of both", but as the Meepit option is there, I picked that :P

I like to tihnk of it as though they run around being all anthropomorphic, but we all have our clutches on their souls!

In my reality, my Neopets live on their own...but I'm sort of an omnipotent being that they interact with. I don't actually live with them, and they rarely actually see me, but they know who I am (and that I feed them lol). So I picked "a bit of both."

Most neopets are domesticated by human owners.

However, there are some wild packs out in the wilderness.

Neopets can live on their own just fine, but are smart enough to realise that if they pretend to be pets we'll feed them and groom them and everything. But the meepits rule all.

I'd say it's more of a parent/kid thing really - you have the humans (us) who work and make money to feed and groom and educate (and so on...) the pets (who aren't really pets, but who I'll just call pets for clarity), and then you have the pets who can just enjoy the good stuff, have to do something they don't really want because we tell them to every so often, and well... that's about it. Since there are no schools I guess it makes sense that they just run around all day, with the older brothers and sisters looking out for their younger siblings, and probably being friends with the pets of their 'owner's' neofriends.

Yeah, the way I think of my neopets is kind of a cross between pets and children. They are animals and are pets, but they are sentient, have their own lives, and can take care of themselves to some extent. But they need me to look after them and provide for them, and all that stuff.

My petpets are semi-sentient too. Because I wrote a (very stupid) story about my eyrie and her zomutt, and the zomutt can understand what the eyrie says, but cannot talk. I guess petpetpets wouldn't be sentient at all, they're just little bugs and such.
