I broke out laughing when reading the editorial in this week's Neopian Times:

Quote:
There is a Petpage where it sponsors a place for adopting and morphing rare painted pets into green Unis. Is this reportable? The boards are going crazy about it! The Petpage is called GUP: Green Uni Project. ~anticipating

And...

Hallo thur TNT! =D I'm sure it has already been brought to your attention, but there is a new group of people who call themselves "GUP" (Green Uni Project). They have been causing quite a stir on the help chat, and when I went to investigate I was horrified to find out what they were doing! They are pound surfing for painted Neopets to morph into green Unis as they believe that people should work for their Neopets, instead of adopting them. I know that once a Neopet enters the Pound it is up to anyone what they do once they adopt it. But this is a bit far, no? x-x So, I was just wondering, is there anything you can do about this? Or are the "GUP" members going to be left to carry on with their green Uni-ifying? Thanks, TNT! ^^ Also, could you pretty please leave my name out?

And many, many more...

This is not reportable unless said users are breaking rules, such as using programs to adopt the Neopets, or outright lying or scamming to trick people into giving up their Neopets so they can nick them from the pound during a transfer. Under normal circumstances, though, once a Neopet is abandoned by its previous owner, the only person who has the right to decide how to take care of or alter the Neopet is the new owner. Some people like to adopt and cure the Neopet of any illness and feed them. Others zap them with the Lab Ray. Others… turn them into green Unis. It is the way of things. However, since we got an amazing number of questions regarding this, we'll expand our thoughts on it so you fully understand.

To be quite honest, our first reaction was, "ROFL!!" It's amusing to see all the different things players come up with to do on Neopets that we've never even imagined. ;) So we were actually more than a little amused at the true intentions of "GUP" or any group like them. In reality, begging for painted Neopets or surfing the pound looking for Neopets and only adopting them because of their colour, while perfectly legitimate, is, well... we'll just say it's not as rewarding an experience as creating a Neopet (or adopting one) and enhancing it yourself. While many players consider the practice of these "GUP" users "cruel," we find it no more cruel than people who only adopt Neopets for their use as a status symbol and dump them back in the pound as soon as a "better" colour comes along... or people who require outrageous "applications" for their Neopets only to use it to draw attention to themselves and hold other users in the balance while they decide. Why isn't any of that considered taking it "too far?" Of course we know not everyone is like this, but a lot of users are, and we don't blame anyone for taking a stand against it.

In any case, no matter which "side" you've chosen, no one has the right to spam or harass another person for ANY reason. You're welcome to disagree and debate the various points of view or express your opinions on the subject, but keep it civil. And remember... Neopets is a game. It's supposed to be fun, not taken so seriously that your head explodes from the stress.

These will inflate, anyway... eventually.

I later came across a few topics on the neoboards on the topic, which got chaotic pretty quickly (precisely the intent of the GUP, no doubt). But I want to see what PPTers, who I assume can hold a level-headed and reasonable discussion, have to say about the GUP.

Personally, I too am amused and in fact delighted to find that there is really an "evil" organization with a nefarious plan for Neopia outside of a TNT-war/plot. At first I even suspected that TNT themselves were behind all this, to stir things up a bit, but it seems genuinely made up by users.

I don't even mind the new danger to transfers. GUP can be no more of a danger than pound surfers, as their numbers and resources are limited. And besides, the fad will die out soon - but meanwhile I'm enjoying this little controversy and I think it makes the game that much more interesting. Sloth would be proud! :D

On one hand, I absolutely cracked up when I saw what was going on.

On the other hand, I suddenly was struck dumb with "OMG What If they managed to grab a pet I was trying to transfer to a side?! I'd be HORRIFIED!"

It's things like this that make me believe that we really need to get TNT to implement something to allow safe transfers... I think the basis itself is hysterical, but it's kind of sad for those who may lose out.

I am a bit for and against it x-x As weird as that sounds.

I know that some freaks take good pets out of the pound, and changing them into green unis could solve the problem, but I also think it's unfair that they are messing up transfers...

Green uni's are pretty though @.@

Gah, but if there are too many they won't be original! XD :o

Thanks a lot,

Julia Frank

Its only annoying to me because it is a fad. Plenty of people are clogging up the chats picking sides, creating boards and petpages, all for their 15 minutes. I dont avoid the Neoboards like a lot of PPTers, and GUP stuff is really outrageous on a few of the Chats. Plenty of the morphers dont seriously care why GUP does it. They just want their name on a petpage somewhere.

In terms of what theyre actually doing, I dont mind. It probably bothers avatar-pet lenders and adoption agencies more. And it probably would make me roll my eyes if one of my labbed and abandoned pets were morphed, since I specifically pound them hoping to make someone happy.

While I find the prospect of losing one of my beloved pets in transfer (which if you do it right and at the right time and don't have technical problems the chance is quite slim) I agree with the above sentiment more than I worry. I find something really special in naming my pets and picking out their color and working hard and saving to paint them...that whole process is why I love my pets and I keep coming back to neo. I find the whole adopting and zapping and releasing thing kind of...I don't know. More self serving? I'm sure it does work for some people but not for me. I think that if people don't work for their pets, the attachment is less and then makes the game less fun.

Soo..yeah. That wasn't meant to attack anyone and I agree this is just a silly fad built up by people who want their name in the topics of neoboards, but I appreciate the idea behind their actions. Although I hope the inflation of the morphing potions doesn't spread to the rest of them. Because then I'd be not a happy camper.

To bad they didnt decide all pets need to be Draiks LOL.

I am one of those Adopt and Release people tho I dont do it very often anymore. I like to Adopt then wait till the pet turns a new color... basicly just something not basic and release for someone who can't affoird to paint there pet yet. But seriously how often is it anyone can get there 'dream' pet from the pound? Not very dang often... and most often even if you where to see it the name is going to turn you off from it! So I really think the people turning pets into green Uni's is silly if nothing else!

But hey they want to waist there neopoints on Morphing potions go them LOL

I think they picked Green Unis, because it's the absolute cheapest morphing potion you can buy (since there's no Uni-specific avvie, and it can be won from the wheel of excitement).

I personally think it's kinda dumb, but reading the editorial did make me laugh a bit. I do like Unis more than most pets, but I certainly wouldn't want say, a Halloween Lupe turned into one. Or worse - a lab-only colored pet. It'll die out eventually.

Personally, I think it is "a pity" that one group of users wish to impose their views onto others.

What other people do, within the rules of neopets, is quite frankly none of their business and while appreciating that sentiment cuts both ways, I think they are just on a power trip.

It amuses me greatly that people would spend all those neopoints just so other people have to work for their pets. Honestly, if you have nothing better to spend your neopoints on, donate it to the Money Tree.
I guess that goes against their phylospohy though.

I kind of think its funny. I feel that Gup should be more organized - like a guild or something. If that did happen, someone transferring to a side could just PM the leader, and the leader could tell the Gupers not to GUP it.

But they might anyways. I feel the boards are ridiculous, and they're too popular. It's annoying that people on the board say 'Don't make these boards' and then continue to post that, bumping Guping posts back up - in turn creating more anti-gupers, and more people who do it. It's just got to stop.

I searched the pound for a good ten minutes, and didn't find any Green Unis though. Now, I would be highly amused if they worked to get every pet in the pound to a green uni - I would totally support that :D. Um, yeah, I know I didn't give a straight out answer, but I still need to decide which side I'm on ;)

Wonder where this leads to?

Since my lab ray's kind of rotting away on my main right now, I like to use to to zap random pets and pound them so someone else can randomly stumble across a nicely painted pet. To have someone snatch it up and turn it into a green uni makes me feel like I'm just wasting my time.... and ray abilities.

Not to mention that I'm now scared to death of transferring any of my painted/LE pets now.

So, although I support their right to do it (after all, they're not breaking any rules), I certainly don't agree with it.

EDIT:...Solution! I should start adopting green unis as lab rats.

I don't really care one way or another. I am not planning on adopting any more pets or transfering them. It may be helpful actually, as people will think twice about trying to transfer a pet. I mean, just keep it where it is.

Anyway, I think people should work for the limited edition pets.

I'm just sad because I missed the opportunity to profit from this. I checked the prices for GUMPs after the editorial was released, and they were at 10K. Now they're at 15K. I could have made an easy 100K off of this.

I think it's mean-spirited. It's one thing try and promote the idea that people shouldn't obsess about colors and pet rarity, and that it's good to earn things yourself, but it's totally different to ruin someone's chance at a nice pet because you're so self-righteous that you have to impose your opinions on other people. So someone pound-surfs all day just because they're only interested in collecting "rare" pets. So what? Who is that hurting? Neopets is not the place to teach people all these sanctimonious little life lessions. In my opinion the GUP people are no different from scammers: they only play so they can wreck the game for others.
