Is the name you want for your new pet taken? Heres some tricks to get the name you want :)
Feel free to add some

Use lower case L as a capital I
(Like instead of Imprison use lmprison, they look the same on neopets)

You can also use capital I's as lowercase L's
lowlife>> IowIife (They look like L's on neopets)

If you dont mind using a little 1337 speak you can use
|3 instead of a capital B (Making it with a lowercase L and a 3)
Babycakes >> l3abycakes

Or making an R the same way, but with a lowercase L and a 2
Remove>> l2emove

Hope these helped! I seen someone on the boards the other day using the l3 instead of a B and it helped me name some pets Ive wanted :)

Add a last name for you pet either just separated with an Underscore

windy to windy_peters,

or Medieval fashion

shadow to shadow_of_Altador

this also works nice if you want to make your pets tied together as more of a family

I play on maple story a lot, and I tend to want to use names that really sound like names-yes, I promise, this relates to neopets. xD

Anyway, what I often do is fool around with spellings, or add in letters that do not change how the name is pronounced. 'h' and 'e' are the easiest ones to use. Just remember: It IS a name, you can say its pronounced however you wish it to be pronounced! So if you say a certain letter is silent, then darn it all, it is! So don't worry too much about adding those extra letters, just make sure the name doesn't look too awkward. It will take some trial and error, but you'll get there eventually.

Also, if you aren't too particular on real-world names and just want something that sounds cool, you can use this site:
http://rinkworks.com/namegen/
I LOVE it :P
It uses real suffixes and parts of words in many different languages to make really nifteh names ^^

I use the fantasy name generator alot, but prefer compounding two common words together; like I had a lab rat named Catfence. I just know that nobody else has taken the name Anklesnark (from the name generator) and that is a cool sounding name. Anybody who needs to but numbers in a pet name like a badly generated aol username is just being silly!

Does anybody also know anything about names being recycled? In that I mean that they become available again, perhaps when accounts are deleted or purged?

I sometimes come across pet names that you would expect to be long gone, but the pets (as well as the user accounts) haven't even been older than a month. Strangely enough, the last time the users were online was at the same day of making that account, like the last one I found, a pet named Vesper. Side accounts? Or perhaps even bots?

You're very welcome. I discovered it a while ago surfing google (i freakin love that place XD)

I've kept it my dirty little secret for a while, figured it was time to share :P

-EDIT-
Also, i've had a TON of luck using Gaelic as the language I name my pets in. It's VERY rare for a gaelic name to be taken, and you can get some awesome meanings in there. I named my friend's hissi DragaoNimhe, it means Poisonous Dragon Snake ^^
It's rather difficult to find a good gaelic dictionary, however, so good luck on that... wish I could recommend one, however, i can't for the life of me remember which i used and now i can't find it again XD

Yeah there was a topic about that not too long ago, when TNT apparently purged a lot of old inactive accounts.

I wish I would have thought about these tricks and known about that name generator thing when I made my main account and first pet. *hides in shame of the numbers*

I like the names of my side accounts much better, I wish I could switch my main.

The rest of the pets I've named I am very proud of their names. I came up with them myself by mixing things together and messing with spelling.
For my uni I used a elf name generation used for RPGs, then changed the spelling.
For my Draik, I combined two Japanese words that fit his personality.
My Kacheek's name is just completely made up, but it sounds like a name.
I also think using 1337 is cool. I have an adopted kacheek with an awesome name spelled in 1337 :D

*raises hand* Guilty as charged, on my main account definitely. But I love those two! They were my first pets and I got really attached to them. Still am.

But for the later pets, I do all kinds of things for their names. Amsahyasi, for example, came from an Arabic name meaning 'friendly' and an alternate spelling of Jasmine. Kludgeus came from a word I found in a thesaurus - he's an Ogrin, and I was looking for a word that meant something along the lines of 'mish-mash' or 'put together'. Djauko was a result of playing around with the name Jocko, who was this utterly moronic henchman in an episode of the cartoon show Freakazoid. Rugosalyn is also a combination name: Gosling for a baby goose, and Rugosa, the genus name of a certain species of rose that has a ragged appearance. Druscylla came from a girl's name that's not really used much anymore (Drusilla) plus the mythical Scylla.

I guess I just let a personality develop, design a character around it, and let the name kind of flow from that.

EDIT: Hee, no no, I don't own Jocko. I own Djauko. ;) *gives him huge bone-crushing hug* And I love the little imp to pieces, I does.

EDIT II: Just realized, I totally should have named his petpet Foamy. :roflol: I'm changing it next chance I get.
