I got this off of jellyneo (atm, it's on their front page)... apparently they're planning to make a walk-through Neopia- sounds like it'll be more of an MMOG... like Disney's penguin world game perhaps?
Quote:
World of Neopia will build upon the fundamental Neopets meta-game and its existing play patterns, and enhance those experiences in a graphical, in-world environment easily accessible online. The new, multi-player geared toward tweens, but appealing to all ages, will include games, a community, in-world chat, and customization, among other activities. Players will be able to discover the deep story lines within Neopia as their Neopets explore the various Neopian lands.

They've already been rolling out lots and lots of changes (site layout, customization...); I hope it's more of an interface change more than anything else- I like Neopia just the way it is, since you can interact with others as much (or as little) as you want, unlike MMO's where you'd almost always have some New Member following you around screaming "g1V3 1T@MZ plz!!1!!!!!!!11!!" :P

I hope it's flash or java-based though; rather than some windows-only thing (.NET, 3D life plugin...) We'll see what the future holds, but for now, all aboard the glitch express... choo choo!

Oh man.
If that happens I'm just leaving Neopets. First they gum up the site with changes and Malls and glitches, and then they go and start changing it again! I can't be the only one with a slow computer and a rubbish net connecton who can hardly load any flash, and I'm definitely not going to spend a small fortune on another computer just to play Neo.

It's what we all thought with the NC mall and the sponsors and the ads. Commercialising. It's more like a huge time-wasting-money-grabbing scam than the cosy virtual pet game it used to be.

I wouldn't mind if they had something on the side. Heck, I don't want to wander around Neopia. I want to sell my items and junk, play the stock market, and all that good stuff. I'm sure I'd probably leave Neopets and leave part of my soul there.

If this is what becomes of the main site, I will leave. Seriously. The large amount of changes (most of them for the worse) have been attracting more new players and making a lot of older players leave.

And because all these new users are signing up, the site lags horribly. While restocking a few days ago, I got page loads around the 15 second range (normally, pages load well under 1 second) TNT's servers are in desperate need of upgrade/repair. Numerous servers were "broken" a couple days ago when items in the main shops reportedly stopped restocking for nearly 5 hours, yet another example of how the site needs to be fixed.

In my honest opinion, I think TNT needs to fix issues that are already here (Pound, TP Glitches, Auction Glitches, BD Glitches, CUSTOMER SERVICE, etc.) rather than ignore these issues and work on a new project. This reminds me of a topic someone posted on the BD Chat a few days ago: "CHALLENGE: Name 1 thing on Neo that isn't broken" It took some thinking to answer that question.

You really think TNT is behind this? It's most likely Viacom, just milking it for every penny it's worth.

Kind of like Disney and High School Musical, except that wasn't even good in the first place.

Hey I saw that board! :P Hardly anyone could think of anything. I think I said "Feeding your pets." or something obscure like that.

World of Warcraft is what comes to mind when I think "virtual world" like this. I love WoW but it's a serious time waster/drainer/killer and I have spent far more time on developing and building up characters on it than I ever did in a day on Neopets. If that's what Neopets wants to try, they will have a very tough road ahead of them as it's not easy to do that kind of environment successfully. And if it is something else less immersive, then I can't think of how that would really be an improvement on the existing system which would be great if it were properly functioning and maintained.

amen. Can't really build unless your foundation is secure.

Haven't decided for or against though; I guess I'll wait and see.

I think most people are tentative about it (like myself) because the changes that Viacom has made were generally for the worse. You never know though too.

I think that if this is well made and implemented correctly (i.e. no glitches), it could be pretty awesome. I know that for a long time, people have wanted to be able to see their pets walking around, meeting other pets, interacting in neohomes, etc. I'm going to wait to see what it's actually like though before I decide if I like it or not.

It actually looks really fun to me. As long as it's an addition and not instead of the gameplay we have now. It sort of looks like neoquest to me, only 3D.

I hope it's completely optional. I have no desire for the above -- it would take too much time. I don't really care that much about the pets per se, and I like choosing the level of interaction with other players (I try to stay mostly anonymous). But if it's an extra thing, I have no problem with them adding it for those who would like something like that.

However, I agree that they should really focus on fixing the problems with the basics before trying to improve. I know coding new stuff can be more fun than debugging (although I think there's a certain thrill in working through a pretty complex debugging problem, myself), but they're getting paid to run the site, and debugging is essential.
