marching band-related question/CRY FOR HELP!

Sat Feb 19, 2005 1:26 am

i play the piano. lets get that straight, first off.
heres my problem:
i am in the 8th grade, and any 8th graders who want to be in high school marching band have to start now. so, i did. there are auditions. it turns out that because piano and xylophone are together in the pit, the band director wants me to audition on xylophone. I DONT PLAY XYLOPHONE! i play the piano, i have for almost 9 years! i play it darn good, too :D can anyone give me any tips on how to maybe, help my situation, or make the transition from piano to xylophone easier for me?

Ok, you're going to be in marching band, correct? And you expect to play the piano? I don't know if they've got any portable ones, but I do know I never saw one when I was in marching band (1 year ago).

As for how to make it easier, I really don't have any tips, just try to practice a lot. I've seen people master several instruments at once, so it shouldn't be that hard to make the transition.

*shrug* plus, piano = treble and bass clefs. I agree with urthdigger, though...a piano in marching band? o_O

Brass is fun. You get to be loud. *plays trumpet*

um. Other than that, I don't know a lot about percussion except with the xylophone you're supposed to alternate hands, not use one hand for everything. I think. Don't quote me on that one, as I'm only going off of remembering our band teacher telling the percussionists to alternate hands.

Basically, get as much practice as you can, especially working up the speed of your wrists. You may find it helpful to get a drum pad and a pair of sticks to help you with that. Otherwise it shouldn't be too hard for a piano player like yourself.

(I played piano for years before landing in the pit in junior year of high school (I'd been wanting to get in for a while, ever since discovering I didn't like marching at all).)
