Tokyo Mew Mew

Sat Feb 19, 2005 9:52 pm

Did anyone watch the new "Mew Mew Power" on Fox? I've been watching Tokyo Mew Mew in Japanese for a while now, and is it just me or did they skip like 5 or 6 episodes in the American Version? Oh, and did they also add suckiness? I normally don't mind American Versions, but they just altered this too much. :(

I was going to watch it tomorrow, just to see if it was any good...my hopes aren't high, though...

I've only read the first two books of the manga...

Seeing it was 4Kids who did the dub... I was afraid of what they did with the series when I first saw the trailer for it last year. >< The Americanized names and voices didn't really fit with the characters (is it just me or was the voice Zoey/Ichigo's crush too deep compared to the other guys on the show)... all the random vocal music was on par with their Winx Club (meaning annoying and really didn't fit)

It does look like they skipped a few episodes (although the preview looked like it was the first episode.)

Not suprising that it was disappointing.

I almost screamed - really. I like Tokyo Mew Mew. I LIKED THE OLD NAMES. Zoey. Bridgette. Renee. WHAT HAPPENED TO ICHIGO? ZAKURO? LETTUCE? MINT? PUDDING? AAAHHHH............ *Voice gradually fades away, ranting*

I think it's boring. I always watch W.I.T.C.H on Toon Disney.

The animation looked good but i didn't watch it since it looked like it screwed over the original thing

Mon Feb 21, 2005 2:19 am

It did screw over the original. I've watched most of the original Japanese episodes with subtitles.

(mercurius: This episode was a preview. Next week they're going back to the first episode and beginning the series.)

Main problems:

1. Ayoama (aka 'Mark' x.x) sounds like a creepy 30-year-old, where in the original he sounds like a 12-year-old.

2. Ichigo ('scuse me, Zoe...) and the rest of the Mew Mews now sound like Valley Girls. The voices are high and stupid. And Lettuce, the green-haired one whose American name I can't remember, has a voice WAY too outgoing for her character.

3. The aliens, in the Japanese version, were originally from Earth and we were the ones who took over thousands of years ago- the American version says "They don't have a planet of their own, probably because they used up all their natural resources."

This totally screwed up the fact that, in the original, you could relate to their cause more, rather than them being just the "big bad meanies".

4. Too many puns on the word "mew".

And Zoe's slogan, "Mew mew style, mew mew grace, mew mew power in your face!"...
what the heck???? :x In the Japanese version, it's "For the future of the Earth, I'll be of service, ~nya!"

5. At the end- major plot hole. When Mark is all "oh, it's cool you're a mew mew so don't worry about it"...

He's not supposed to find out she's a mew mew in the Japanese version for the next like 30 episodes or something idiotic like that. In the Japanese version of this one he just has Mew Ichigo confused with Ichigo, and he apologizes for thinking it was her.

6. They've turned it into a teenybopper show. The Japanese verison is more dramatic in parts, Ichigo is less of a ditz (which I didn't think possible) The aliens don't sound female and the plot isn't so chopped up into bite-sized pieces.

I am not happy. And I know I sound like a rabid fan, so sorry!

:roflol: That made me giggle.

When I first heard they put Toyko Mew Mew on FoxBox I just turned around and pretended it didn't happen. Oh but it did. It did.

They really killed Zakuro's name...Bridgette? HOW THE HECK DO YOU GET BRIDGETTE OUT OF ZAKURO?!

That got SERIOUSLY annoying after awhile.

Ugh, I don't care if 4Kids killed it, it's my first 'real' anime next to Card Captor Sakura, and I'll proudly watch it! Even if I do miss a little because it's at a bad time. (on my fox, it's on at 9am.)

Heh, that's one of the reasons I didn't watch it. Seriously, I think that getting up by 11:30 for Shaman King is hard...

Anyway, I think the changing of the names alone is enough to turn me away from the dub. Or at least I'll get into the manga more and then start watching it, so I have a better frame of reference...

Yeah... I would have been so much happier if whatever dubbing company cartoon network is affiliated with did it instead...

but 4kids. Bleh! :(

CN isn't affliiated with any dubbing studio.... it's mostly dependant on the company that gave them the rights for network broadcast.

Gah, now I see why people complain so much about dubs. ;) lol This was horrible. I'm usually one to stand by dubs, too. The premiere of TMM made me want to barf. Way too sugary for me. That's saying a lot. ;) I *love* the original TMM. I do not like calling it Mew Mew Power, as well. I probably should to differentiate from the two, though. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad the girls get to watch it. It's an excellent show and they are going to get to watch it in some version for now. I can assure you that as soon as they are old enough to read subtitles, they will be handed Toyko Mew Mew. :) I'm hoping there will be edited "unedited" dub dvds in the future. (I would want totally unedited, but don't hold your breath for that. ;) )

I thought far too much was given away in the premiere as well. It's much better when you are given the story as it unfolds, not everything in the beginning, then the story. Who came up with that "brilliant" idea? O.o

Really? Well, they get good companies, then, I guess. Let's see... the only other two good Anime shows I've watched or have heard about (which only extends to Sailor Moon, when I was younger, and Inyuasha, which I've heard tons about... I'm not much of an anime buff, I just happened to get into TMM  ) were on Cartoon Network. Do they get a lot of different companies to do these?
