Some of you may know about a site called Nexopia.com. If you do not know of it, it is a site where you can create an account, enter information about yourself, and then talk to your friends online. That sounds nice and all, right?

WRONG.

Because of some content, both personal and explict, that has been placed on some people's accounts that go to my school, three people have been suspended and it is now believed that they are tracking IP addresses. (They can get our IP addresses from when we go to their portal, see.)

So I was just wondering - is this possible, and how could I prevent it? Also, could MSN also possibly be at risk? (ie. conversations read)

PS: I've never used stuff like forums, Nexopia, MSN, ect. from a school computer. I'm just worried they might use my IP to track the sites I've gone to, such as Evboard.

You realize, PPT tracks your IP too right?

I have deleted my account from there. Nothing else to do with that stupid site! >:(

So could they still use my IP address, track it, and find out everything that I do at home? A lot of people have told me that I would get in trouble from a school computer, but what about my home computer IP? Say, if I went to the Portal and then they used my IP to find out I've gone to, say, the NTWF. They check some of the content there and find it 'unsuitable', and I end up suspended. You don't suppose anything like that could happen from a HOME computer?

why would your school be trying to track your home computer usage? Unless you were trying to hack into the school computers or something like that ... which of course you wouldn't do, right?

Just about every site uses cookies and can track your IP, especially ones you have to log into. But for the most part, just visit a site, then view your cookies - 9 times out of 10, you'll see a cookie there.

Your home IP.. and your school IP.. differ o.O

Pretty much every site tracks your IP, somehow. My personal site does. But it doesn't mean I look at it.

There is essentially one way to track what sites you visit.

Someone accesses your history or they install a trojan that logs all outbound connections.

Don't worry though, this is not a problem if you take precautions (such as firewalls, antivirus, etc).

Also, phpBB does not keep a record of your IP address, unlike most popular bulletin board systems. However, there are hacks to enable this, which PPT might have done (I don't know).

From reading this, I've actually gathered the impression that these people who were suspended accessed the accounts from a school computer. I seriously doubt that the website told the school anything, based upon your IP address. Instead, I have a feeling the school has been tracking activities on school computers and the students were suspended for posting such information from school. It's not uncommon for schools to monitor activities on their computers. It is, after all, their right, no matter how invasive. School computers are for school assignments. Not for Internet social lives.

However, if they didn't post the information from school computers/ever access the accounts from school computers, then I don't really know what's going on there and can't much help.

Oh, yeah, and because I said that monitoring usage of schools is perfectly within rights, does not mean I condone the act of suspending students based upon their online activities. It's none of the school's business to ruin the academic lives of students based upon stuff they post online. There may be, however, some kind of rules your school holds in which unauthorized/inappropriate use of school computers becomes cause for disciplinary action. If that's the case...well, I still don't think suspension was justified...

You're right. It does in the sense that it tags IP addresses with each post, but it doesn't keep a record of each users IP address. So if someone never posted, phpBB wouldn't have any record of their IP. For this reason, phpBB sickens me ;)
