Hm...well. How should I say this. This guy who has been using BT has been arrested. Not sure what he was downloading though; anyhow, it is said he might be imprisioned. Therefore my mum has told me to stop using bittorrent and delete the history of it. But the thing is, where am I going to get my anime and manga and STUFF from? Of course, there is mirc. However, BT helps when downloading loads of files (like over 1 gig in a torrent).

Now my mum got me worried about this problem >.> any ideas or comments on it?

If the anime / manga you're aquiring is licensed in your area, it doesn't matter if you get it through BT, IRC or any other means -- it's still illegal, and you can still be sent to court for it. BT is a little bit more transparent as to who is downloading what.

Then again, if the anime you're downloading is not licensed, there's no punisment (afaik) for downloading it from any channel. BT has a valid, legal use: distributing free software (such as linux), and therefore will probably not be outlawed.

BitTorrent does not keep history of what you downloaded, but if MPAA / RIAA already got you logged, there's not much you can do to delete those logs.

So, your mom's message should be "Stop downloading illegal content, and erase all traces of you doing so." rather than point at any specific program.

I googled and found out the person was uploading 3 movies. Daredevil, something and Miss congeniality...so I'm not surprised he got arrested >.>

MPAA = Motion Picture Association of America
RIAA = Recording Industry Association of America

Lets say you are legally downloading episodes of an unlicensed anime and then, unbeknownst to you they go and license it. You continue to download thinking you are acting legally, when infact you are not. To give yourself a little bit of security and provide yourself some time to find out these new developments before you get nasty letters, there are programs to help.

If you use Azureus as your client, there is a plugin known as safepeer. You can download and install it using the plugin wizard. If you use another client, or just dont want to use safepeer ( or even if you want to use this and something else ), I recommend a program named Peer Guardian 2.

These programs download lists of IP's which really shouldnt be allowed to view your data transfers, and blocks them. Pretty nighty.

Of course, this method would also work for anyone just downloading any type of torrent. But I couldnt possibly encourage that sort of thing.

If you use it, you may have to allow IPs from band websites. Same goes for some other "big company" websites.

well.....you can always connect to a proxy or somethin.... most bt clients and other apps have a proxy feature =o

Don't download movies, whatever you do. I've been sent 3 warnings from the MPAA on movies I was sharing, and next means internet wire gets snipped.

BitTorrent is perfectly legitimate, on occasion I've seen NASA use it.
