advice on apple laptops?

Wed Oct 26, 2005 9:21 am

i have been looking to get a laptop, and have decided to look at an apple for something different, but there is a fair price range different between a powerbook and an ibook, and i'm wondering if its worth the difference, and if its worth waiting.

recently had a bad experience with apple, where i bought a mini ipod, the 6gb version, when it just came out.. only to have the nano come out 2 months later.. -.- i would have been willing to wait for it *sigh*

i heard soemthing about apple changing their chip contract to intel or soemthing, but i really don't know much about this, frankly if in 6 months time apple bring out something which would make mine obselete, i woudl wait..

and i was also hoping for advice on whether its worth getting a powerbook over an ibook, i was looking at the 12 inch ones and the powerbook looks better, but its about $600 more. i know nothing really about laptops except i need it to be light, sturdy, have good battery life and be able to be used in a variety of locations. i'm a student, and like to sit outside and do stuff, and to use it at uni and stuff :P

any advice appreciated!!

Hmm, if you want a 12", I'd go for the iBook. Apple just updated their Powerbooks, but not much was done on the 12" so I don't think it's worth the extra price. But it all depends on what you are going to use it for. Do you need the extra performance in the Powerbook or does a iBook work as well? :)

I've also heard that the Powerbooks easily can get dents and such in the metal case, but I don't know how true that is. The iBook is made of plastic and does get scratches more easily, but not dents and such.

I suggest you think through what you're going to use the computer for and see if you really need the extra performance and features on the Powerbook.
About Intel, yes they are changing their processors from the PPC to Intels. Powerbook is probably the first computer that will change, but as far as I've heard, that will not happen very soon. So it might be a good idea to get a cheaper iBook now and upgrade later on when they release the new ones.
The iBook has better battery life btw :)

ooh thanks :)

i've decided, a couple of other friends also helped, and that article too, if its going to be 2007, thats far too long for me. and i would probably use it mainly for assignments and stuff, computer use and light graphics dabbling and stuff.

going to get the ibook and get a hard drive upgrade to 80gb, and that should be pretty decent. and as for scratches.. well i suppose i will try and have to take care of it, being white, i was a bit worried about it getting dirty, hence a look at the powerbook, someone also said the keys are nicer, but it does work out cheaper buying the ibook and upgrading it, since i'me probably also going to have to get the applecare and stuff,

thanks for the advice  it certainly helped alot! :) thanks again :)
