Converting Dvd files into MPEG/AVI/Other

Just wondering if there is any Freeware programs I can use.. Right now, i'm ripping dvd files straight from the Dvd.. but they come out into dvd files, and theres no way to easily convert it to MPEG/AVI to edit it and such..
Anyone know of any Freeware software I can use? I know theres a Windows program that can do it.. but it's like $3-.. <_<

That's a popular one, but search for keywords like dvd, rip, avi etc. if you're not satisfied
