Windows Problems

Sat Feb 11, 2006 9:53 pm

At the moment, my main computer is having a bit of problem. I'm on a spare computer right now, so I'm liberated from the constant bugginess, but I'd appreciagte any help. Whenever I boot it and log on as a user it does one of three things. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition (I think it's SP1)

(a) The computer lags totally and eventually grinds to a halt making me have to restart it.

(b) The computer lags totally and eventually it claims that "Virtual memory minimum is too low. Windows is increasing the size of the virtual memory paging file." Then restarts my computer. This doesn't fix any problems.

(c) I log in, the computer whirrs and then BSoDs.

I can log in as Administrator on Safe Mode and get into the Setup, so I can fix it - I just don't know what to do to fix it - so it doesn't really matter at the moment. I can also log in on Guest mode, but the problem is that I can't shell any programmes. As a result, I guessed it was something to do with the main account, and I basically replaced my User Account and copied all of my files over. The first time I logged in, it was working fine, I shelled Firefox and it all suddenly froze, restarted and settled into the pattern of taking one of the three options again...

Any help is very much appreciated!!

Please and thanks,

~ Matt

Sounds like a virus or spyware that bugs your computer memory. Try downloading HijackThis, scan your comp, and post the log here, probably some of us can help.

Sounds like a spyware problem.

Download this and run it, it'll solve a lot of things. http://www.pinkpt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23039

At the moment, I actualyl can't download anything. THe problem is that when I log in on Safe Mode, it doesn't recognise the wireless router. When I log on to a user, it falls into one of the holes above, on none of them am I able to even load up an internet window.

I'm running AdAware, but I realised that there's a System Restore function on my computer. I don't know if this will fix it, but if the worst comes to the worst, I don't mind losing a week or so's worth of work.

If you've got the new AdAware, I wouldn't use it.
AdAware's getting paid money to let some spyware slip on the buy.

The absolute best is CCleaner (I'm "cleaning" it up). http://www.ccleaner.com
But, it does sound like a spyware problem. Does it take forever to start?

Matt, systerm restore is great for alot of things, but ... if you do have spyware, etc. on your computer it'll still be there. I always disable system restore when running my full scans, once I know my puter's clean, then I set the restore again with a new restore point.

One thing I would suggest, since you apparently are lucky enough to have access to another computer is to d/l spybot search and destroy, hijackthis, CWshredder, ccleaner (I love!) and stinger from mcafee - it's a stand-alone trojan/virus scanner (free) http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp#stinger

Now you have the exe stuff - copy those onto a disc and put them on the computer in question, then try installing the programs. I'd probably run hijackthis first, since that doesn't need updating. The latest version of stinger (2.6) doesn't either and I just checked my ccleaner - that's up to date, so those could be things you'd want to run too. Spybot will, I'm sure, have to be updated. You may be able to run it without just to check things out.

If nothing works or helps, I'm going to guess that the other option is a clean install (bleh, I hate those).
