I need help. This thing is rapidly draining my sanity -_-

My first iPod, ChibiHao, worked perfectly fine for a month or two after I got it for Christmas. Around February, however, it developed the annoying habit of skipping songs entirely or playing part of them and then skipping to the next one. It would always skip the same songs in the same place, and it would only do this with certain songs. I found a way around this by moving the file to a different place, but this would only work if the skip wasn't in the first three seconds of the song. I learned to live with this for a month or so. Suddenly, after I'd updated it one night, everything was working perfectly again. It was fine for a good three months or so, until I tried to update it again and found that there was something wrong with the software. I reset the it with the iPod Updater, and it started skipping again. Only this time I couldn't get around that. After reseting it several more times, I gave up and got it replaced.

My new iPod, ChibiYoh, is worse. It skips randomly (not the same songs at the same place) and freezes up all the time. To even get it to work at all I have to reboot it (holding down menu and the center button) until the icon with the folder and exclaimation point comes up. Then I have to keep hitting menu until the main menu appears. Last week it randomly deleted all of my music after I rebooted it, and I haven't been able to update anything onto it since. I'm currently reinstalling iTunes and the Updater, but my computer doesn't seem to be recognizing Chibi at all.

Is this a problem with my computer? Could I have accidentally downloaded a virus onto the iPod? Has anyone else had these problems? The Apple tech support website has been largely unhelpful, and any information would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I dont know if the same applies to the Ipod, but my friend had one of those create zen players, and when he filled it to capacity it weighed more and consequently the hard drive didnt work properly (plus it was a pain to carry around something so heavy) so he formatted the hard drive.

Hrmm...I only have 200 something songs, which is less than a GB.

Chibi is a 20-gig black and white click-wheel, BTW.

Sounds to me like it's more likely to be your computer's software than your iPod software - you use iTunes for this, right?

1) I suggest looking to see if any iTunes updates are available - patches and the like. It's possible that it's simply some sort of reaction between the software and your particular O/S, or with some bit of hardware. I was driven almost completely mad when my computer just started randomly crashing on me during my sophomore year of college, turns out it was a problem between Win95 and my processor. Install any pertinent updates, and see if that solves your problem.

2) You should probably uninstall and re-install iTunes anyway, even if there are no updates available.

3) If you're using a windows machine, close all non-necessary programs when adding songs to your iPod. That little tray there on the bottom right? Close everything in it (right-click, then select "close"). Part of your problem may have to do with buffer under-running: as data is being transferred, there's a hangup in the computer, causing a blank spot in the song, which the iPod translates as "end here! Play next song!" If you have more programs running in your system tray, you're more likely to have buffer problems.

That's about the best I can offer.

I uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes and shut down everything that wasn't necessary. The computer doesn't even recognize the iPod at all now. The iPod definately recognizes being plugged in, because the 'Do Not Disconnect' message appears on the screen, but it doesn't even show up when I go to My Computer. I'm going to try a different USB port and see if that works.
