I normally use Windows 2000 if I'm on my computer, which I'm stuck for a long while, as my dad's fixing the two Windows XPs, and the 2000 was being awful; so I put in the DSL(Damn Small Linux) cd that Mum gave me, and installed four programs from MyDSL: amsn, amsn-0.94 (just in case one needed the other), Gimp-2.2.8, and a mahjong game. For some reason, Amsn and Gimp aren't coming up at all, could someone help me get them to work? =\

Edit: Also, whatever programs I download, and files I save just disappear when I reboot or shut down, why? And how can I get around this without keeping my computer on forever, it's really bothering me.

To answer your second question, it's because you're probably running a LiveCD, so it's running entirely in your memory. Everytime you shut down, you lose the files.

Install to a hard drive (less popular), or take the DLS CD out and burn the files to another one.

I don't know about DLS, but Puppy linux has the option of a multisession CD, where it just burns the changes back to the CD each time you shutdown. Since the actual OS only takes up 50-100MB, you can burn several sessions to a CD. You should see if there's an option like that for DLS.
