Can you block sites in Mozilla Firefox like in IE? And is it actually effective?

They might have some filters in the preferences menu. I'm running actual Mozilla, so I can't help.

Currently there isn't an option to block certain sites, only to block certain sites from downloading things into your computer.

There's probably an extension or something that does that though.

Because maybe he wants to feel secure on the internet and doesn't want to be led by a misleading advert to a pornographic site?

Or maybe you could just edit your hosts file (if you don't understand, you can search the Internet for details) to assign an incorrect IP address to sites you don't want access to. Of course, that will also affect any other browser you are using that wants to access the site.

You can find an extension that does that in:

http://update.mozilla.org

or at:

http://www.extensionsmirror.nl

Just search for a keyword such as "filter" or "content" or something along those lines and have fun with the fox. You will not regret the change. ;)
