PPT Filter

Sun Jan 09, 2005 7:26 pm

I was wondering if one word could be taken off the PPT filter, D i c k.

I have never seen the word used inappropriately on the forums but I have seen a wee bit of confusion due to its conversion into smurfiness.

This has been a bit cumbersome in topics such as Jane and smurf, Robin's alter-ego smurf Grayson, and classic author Charles smurf -ens.

Keep Charles Dickens out of this. ;)

Could that be explained by the filtering (and you substituting the filtered version of it for a variety of other possible words)?

Plus, that's also a dude's name, if someone had that name and posted it here and it was turned into Smurf, they might be offended or something.

Read my post again. His name is not filtered.

...How about that. I suppose I'll catch on to these things eventually.

I actually think the word should be removed. It is rarely used wrongly, and if it is that's what us moderators are for. It's just too common a word used in normal context to constitute it being on the filter list.

I don't think I've used it once in my many posts during my time here at PPT or encountered a problem with it being filtered. Like Hunter said, the reason most likely that you don't see it missused is that the filter doesn't allow for it. Any member wishing to use this word in a inappropriate manner may be turned off it just because they know it is filtered, and I wouldn't want to test this otherwise.

We are moderators and we do try to catch offending words Matt, but in a circumstance where someone comes only to post filthy messages we can't possible clear them all in an adequate time. It especially can't be done if it happens during a time when staff attendance on the forum isn't at it's peak, so the we use the filter to help.

Anyhow, seems solved now that Hunter wrote Charles Dickens without any problem and the offending word is still being filtered :)

That''s because of the fact that phpBB only filters exact words. If you want "Nose" to filter out only itself, you type "Nose" into the censor, and if you want to filter out any word that contains those 4 letters in that oder you type "*nose*", it's purely because of this reason, no special treatment.

Because of the way you've done it, Hunter, that means that the plural of the offending word has gone unfiltered.

Perhaps if we were still in the early 1900s, the word would be unfiltered, due to phrases such as Railway Smurf. (Yes, I actually typed smurf)

I'm sure though if the plural form shows up, I trust you guys can handle it and remove it since you know the word is inappropaite in that form. Trust us a little in how we choose to do it.

I thought somewords could be totally filtered, while others like Hello-o arnt because then whenever you say "Hello" it gets filtered :D
