wasn't there a little button at the bottom of every post that you could click on and would take you to the person's look-up. whatever happened to it?

That was on the old forums, before the reset.
As far as I know, there's no plans to bring it back. However, if you want people to know your username, you can easily place it in your signature

I'm still puzzled. What was the rationale behind taking it away? 
Since if you were concerned about security you could choose not to put in your username at all.

Alex is correct. It was installed on the old forums but since this one came in, it hasn't been installed in yet.

I think it's more that it hasn't been installed, rather than it being taken away.
