I was looking at who was online, scanning through the list. When I got to the guests, it said a few were 'Viewing private messages'. Can guests do that, or is that the hidden users checking PMs or something?

Hidden users would show up under Hidden. Those guests are probably people logging in to check their PMs, and it's registering them at the log in page.
