Keeping Track

Wed May 18, 2005 4:13 am

With all of the topics in this forum, how do members and moderators keep track of everything? I know that people can back track their own posts but is there ever a point where you just get confused? I stop and take a look around PPT and it gets pretty consuming.

I've been trying to look for a good Neopets forum to join after the two sites that I worked for went down the drain because of power tripping kids, so I figured that I might try and post here.

*blinks*

I just... know what topics i've read, and remember topic titles. I don't read every topic on the forum... some boards I don't frequent as often as others. *shrugs*
If I can't remember what a topic was about, I can normally read the first sentance and remember.

First, welcome to PPT =D

Secondly, I really don't have a problem with keeping up. I don't visit ever single forum. Some I just don't have much reason to be in, like the Anime board.
And with the ones I do go, I usually go to the same ones in the same order everywhere. I start at the top and read any new posts in Announcements, and PPT Discussion & Questions. See, everytime you log in anything that's been posted since your last visit will be marked with an orange icon: Image as opposed to a plain one: Image
The orange icons are a good jumping off point for which threads to read first.
After Announcements and PPT Discussion & Questions, I jump back toward the bottom and read Miscellaneous Discussion and Miscellaneous Polls.
Within each boards, I read new threads from the bottom up. Once I'm satisfied that I've read everything I want to read in any specific area, I move on to the next one. I always save Neopets for last, as it's the most active forum on PPT and usually takes me the longest to read.

I'm quite an addict of the unread posts icons, because if I can keep track of what's been posted since my last visit, then I feel like I can't possibly've missed anything. I don't think anyone here reads every single thing, because it would just take too long.

My advice: take your time and don't try to do everything at once. Eventually you'll probably get into your own little pattern for reading PPT. I'm sure you'll love it here.

Mmm. Very ambitious. I like your mindset... welcome to PPT too. :)

Just go to the places you're interested in. If you want Neopets, you've got a whole section of that to stroll around in. If you want random Games, you've got the No Nutritional Value area. Pick and choose whatever you think sounds interesting by the title...

click and read and post if you feel like.

No need to go through everything though. That would be craaazy! :P

There's no need to worry about power tripping around here... we're pretty much balanced out for your safety. Welcome into PPT again! :)

I do it almost exactly like Saph! There's really no need to read the boards you aren't interested in or don't need to be read
eg:

You don't need to check the Sig and Av Request every time unless you want to request or you have a request board.

As a member I usually keep track of everything going on at PPT by using the "View posts since last visit" and "View your posts" options at the top of the page once you've logged-in. The names of the options basically speak for themselves, both are just lists of the relevant Boards.

I use the "last visit" option to glance over the Board titles of what has been an active topic since I was last around and it gives me an opportunity to see what else is new. I read through the Board titles and click on any that look interesting or I might remember having posted in previously.

The "your posts" option I use to look back through the Boards that I've posted in (the list is placed in order from the last posted in Board to the one that's been inactive for the longest) so it's easy to see which Boards you might have posted in that now have replies or additional information.

Other than that, I have my favourite Boards that I check regularly (eg, the avatar help board) and some specific Forum sections I regularly look through the list of Board titles too (eg, Divas).

Most of the members at PPT are pretty good at naming their Boards well enough so you know what to expect from the Board.

As many of the others have said, you really just need to see what works for you. There is no obligation on you to keep up with everything posted on PPT, that would be a pretty big feat if you could do that!

IMO it would be advisable to keep an eye on the "Everything You Need To Know About The PPT Forums" and "Announcements" sections so you know if anything has changed on the Forums that will affect you but other than that look around and see what you like the look of.

Welcome to PPT I do hope you enjoy your stay here

everyone else has said what i was gonna say!!

the "view posts since last visit" is my friend :) although it means i always spend longer on here than i mean to.

Thanks so much everyone!

This site does seem well balanced. It is nice to see that people can actually type!

After the two help sites were completely obliterated, I used to stop by here and see what was going on. At my other sites, I used to be Administrator in the forums and had to check almost every post. There were a lot of topics but not as much as here. I used to love Neopets but I've started to out grow it (even though some people never do!). Maybe I'll stick around this summer before I start college. We'll see!
