How to do an off site avatar

Hi. I'm not a computer person and don't know how to get the url to do an off-site avatar. I tried it once and it didn't work. So, how does it work? I mean, if you put a web page's url in, it won't work, obviously. So how do you get the url for the specific image you want? You can go ahead and have a laugh on my account, I just want to know what to do. Thanks!

On the image, right click "properties". On your profile, paste what it says after "Address (URL)"

The image also has to be on a site that allows hotlinking or it will not work.
