French Board/Topic Proposal

Mon Aug 27, 2007 2:20 pm

Bonjour fellow PPT'ers,

I am currently in my 4th year of French and I've gotten pretty used to it but what I've found most helpful as Ive been learning French is talking/writing to others who can speak French. I was hoping that there might be an interest within the forum to have a French board. There could be a topic of basic conversation, grammer help, a section for introducing people to French with basic vocab (it'll help out the mods) :D , and maybe translation help. Of course this topic could be expanded to other languages as an intrest is shown, but would this be an idea with some support?

Well theres that to but I think itd be cool to have a board or something so you could have different people helping you all at once. It could be a group also, I just want somewhere we can talk french, and it needs more support than just you and I.

J'ai pris Francais pendant quatre annees dans le lycee mais j'ai oublie beaucoup.

Grr, I need accents. I don't even know if that sentence made sense...but I guess it wouldn't hurt to brush up on French in forums :)

Unfortunately I do not see this as being a viable option. Unless there is a moderator who is absolutely fluent in french I can only say that someone may choose to abuse the privaledges. It would also stem into other language boards, and again, moderators may not know whichever language that pops up. Even though i'm Canadian, I can only speak a bare minimum of French, and quite poorly; let alone write it. I believe that having a topic or a board with each language in it would be quite taxing on the moderating staff and our capabilities.

I would suggest researching another forum to help you learn French or whichever language you are currently interested in.

Well I was speaking to kym before I even made this board and he said that if an intrest was shown we could look into it, each language would be a board so mods wouldnt have to worry about random languages popping up but rather make the boards for specific languages as mods are found, so I guess we can look for a mod fluent or have an admin find a new mod. but I think itd be a great idea if we can get the administration right

What Inrun said for the most part is what my stance on it, it's not a good idea in the long run.

The main fact is that with or without "specialists mods" we need our Moderator and GM staff to fully understand what's going on with every public board (preferably in English only and not having to rely on a pseudo-translator like Babelfish.)

Another problem with the suggestion is that once one language gets a board, we'd have to make a board for every other language which only 1 or 2 members may show some intetrest in. In looking into the future of such boards, it only would attract very limited activity to a point that the boards are vacant after an initial period of time and as well as not finding enough moderators that could fit that criteria to be fluent enough for every single language.

The way I see it, if we had a French board, we'd need to then get a German board, Japanese board etc etc etc. Eventually, we'd have a whole host of topics in a forum (even if it was a private forum or something) that would each require a moderator that is online often, trustworthy and speaks a language fluently. There are currently six posts on this topic alone where non-French speakers cannot read a fair chunk of the text, and therefore have no idea what is being said. It just can't be like that

I know, it'd be fun conversing with others in French, but you have PM for that. The staff need to know what is being said on public boards. Simple as that. If you want to practice it, I'd say use PMs to converse with other French speaking members (clearly, there are a few on this topic alone). If you need help learning French, use the Homework Help thread in Miscellaneous. I just think there are too many problems involved with alternative language boards
