I'll go you one better. Can you please enlighten me as to how editing a post is infact any different to one creating an entirely new post in the "eyes" of our servers?

Im assuming you know why flood control is used while posting.

I get what you are driving at, but then how do your servers distinguish between a reply and a post edit and set different cooldowns for them (as Hunter mentioned?)

You can figure out what you're being asked to do without actually doing it. In this case, it stops you from spamming massive inserts / updates to the database.
