They don't do that to make you feel stupid. Majority of the time the calls they recieve are about basic problems on the customer's end. They go through all of that nonsense to eliminate the obvious problems. It also tends to be a policy of most companies. It just makes things easier for them in the long run.

I hate it though, when the tech support people talk to you as though they expect you to be that dumb. Especially when my internet connection goes down, and I know it's a problem on their end not mine, but they refuse to accept that until I've jumped through several unneccessary hoops on my end to prove it to them.

Most of the time they aren't legally required to provide support for you (which is stupid) and thusly its usally called 'free helpline' or somthing of the like.

My sorrority big sister (who graduated last year) is currently working at an ISP help desk. She has a great story about a call she received where someone "couldn't find the Internet." It was very amusing, although a bit sad. :)

My ex-boyfriend used to work in tech support. It's sad, but people are really that stupid.

Actual questions:
"What's that cupholder thing for?" (the cd-rom).

Tech support guy: "Okay, now press any key."
Customer: "Where's the ANY key?"

He has a lot of great stories!

:roflol: That was so funny. Its so funny when people act stupid like that and there serious about it. I go through something similar like that with my cousin with IM. Once I was telling him to go edit his profile and told him to bring up his buddy list, and he said "whats a buddy list?" *shakes head*

I've heard so many of these, and they never, ever get old.
