Naw-nee-why? I always pronounced it as nah-nee-why.

Hehe, it bugs me when people say that. It makes me sound like someone's grandmother. :P

Then again, I've always wanted to say your name with a U in it, so it evens out.

Naniwai - Naw? NAW? Doesn't Nah sound better?

Yes, if you pronounce it with a long A sound (as in car), the pronunciation could be spelled "nah". But with an a as in "can", it's incorrect.

I think the correct pronouciation requires a Boston accent. I can understand it, but then again I have that accent (at least a little).

Here's some links to Boston's unique langauge system:

A brief sound bite of the accent complete with local references.

...lol!
I don't have a Boston accent (although I hear enough of them!), and the word is Hawaiian, but you're right that it might help. Wouldn't it end up being more of the short-A sound though?
Edit- everyone, try saying NON-ee-why. That might work better.
Edit2- I read those articles. Now I can't stop laughing!

Oh, great. Now I'm going to be singing "Nonny Nonny" by Chris Rice. :P I'm gonna rewrite the lyrics for you...

Nonny Nonny
Non-ee-why
Run the earth and watch the sky

By the way, it's only the citizens of a very cool city who pronounce "Worcester" as "Woostah". (Non-natives pronounce with an R at the end, as Wooster.) It made me laugh so hard to hear Tim McCarver pronounce "Worcester"-- "Tanyon Sturtze is a native of WORE-chester"!

On some other boards, that's often shorted to just "shap," which rhymes with "crap" and "whap."

(I'd use a schwa if I knew the element code for it, but I don't, so I won't).

Shu Poo hhuh? I use to say Sha Poo

My dad lives in Michigan, but he lived in Mass long enough to learn how to know how to pronounce Worcester. Anyway, he told me about how out in Michigan, this young kid from Worcester is drafted to play for a minor league baseball team. He's not the brightest bulb, but he plays ball well. I think it was shortly after the Worcester fire or something because he was getting a lot of questions from the local reporters about his hometown. Unfortunately, he didn't even know what they were talking about because they keep on asking him about Woar-chester.

I'm finally back for the summer, although hopefully I'll spend a little more time away from this screen.

I have no patience for bizzare jumbled names, so I typically assign arbitrary names to them.

For instance, "vkceankraz" is 'vicerun' in my mind. I do that with quite a few names, actually.

I've always pronounced VK's username vee-kay-shee-ann-razz.

I've always said Shaay-Poo for some reason. Oh, and Shapu? *whaps shapu for the "C" word* I don't mind though. Just wanted to do that.

Mines kind of hard.

Zherr-caw-zee.

Kind of a J at the beginning, with a Z mixed in.

Oohhhh, this thread made me laugh. ^^;

I find I get most of the really hard ones right (vkceankraz, Naniwai, Qanda, Xerai, Caesara, etc.) and the supposedly easy ones wrong (xjox - said x-jox for a long time, Silja - even though I know it should be Sil-ya, I always think Sil-jah when I see it).

*reads over Ess-kullsplitter's original post and laughs again* I'm a typical "Eye-rack"-pronouncin' American, for the most part. Sometimes I'll say Ir-ack, which I guess is slightly less wrong. xD

Anyway, I'm not going to bother explaining how to pronounce Erin. Chances are almost all of you have known an Erin or an Aaron at some point in your lives, and already know how to say it. ^^
