Well, I didn't get to go on opening night like I wanted to because Steffy's grades were terrible and her mom was driving, but I went and saw it tonight. It was MUCH better than I thought it would be.
(Spoilers ahead!)
Pros:
-Jim Carrey actually did a pretty good job as Olaf! If they hadn't over-hyped the crap out of him being in the movie, I never would have known.
-Sunny was adorable. I absolutely loved the subtitles and everything. I also liked the fact that they stayed in character for her throughout the movie.
-The Littlest Elf! A perfect way to start out the movie by confusing everyone^^
-The music was truly incredible.
-BEST. CREDIT SEQUENCE. EVER! My mom said that the credits were actually more entertaining than the movie
That song was really catchy too, which goes along with my above comment^^
Cons:
-Klaus wasn't wearing his glasses for a good chunk of the movie. (A minor nitpick, but annoying nonetheless)
-Jude Law. Not nearly mysterious enough to voice act for LS. He just sounds too...
happy...
-The thing with the spyglass. I can see how someone who'd never read the books would get extremely confused by the 5-second mention of VFD(which, might I add, was never mentioned again), then the sort of erratic thing with the spyglasses. I'll admit, even I was a bit confused.
-The way the plot was presented seemed as if small chunks were missing from the movie. Especially the whole 'Nice to meet you, pack your bags, we're going to Peru' thing. I was sort of shocked to see The Marvellous Marriage at the end, but I think they worked it in pretty well.
-The ending was WAY too happy. I mean, it would have been pretty frustrating to see the movie end in a depressing manner, but they could have brought it down a BIT more. The thing with the letter from Europe was overly hokey, IMO, although it made me cry
All in all, I give it a 8.5/10. The best book-to-movie conversion I've seen since LotR.
Now if only the Harry Potter directors could realize that you can reduce a story and still put in all the major plot points...-sigh-
