I have two MODs to present to you. I believe you'll find them both quite useful.

The first is the descriptive_time_zone MOD. Now you know all those GMTs in your Time Zone option in your profile? Well, I bet many of you don't really know which one is appropriate for where you live and many of you won't bother to check the site linked in the description of the Time Zone option. Well, this very easy-to-install MOD will make it MUCH more clearer for members and encourage the use of the Time Zone option.

The second is the Dates for Humans MOD. You know that part of your profile where you see D M d, Y g:i a? I bet many of you do not know how to customize it and/or know what it even is. With Dates For Humans, you don't have to ponder over this option anymore. Instead of the default D M d, Y g:i a, you get a numerous selection of example date formats to choose from. This MOD is also very simple to install.

It's their own choice of whether they want the forum time to be correct relatively to them or not -- and it doesn't take anything to figure out that the clock is x hours ahead or behind, and adjust the timezone appropriately.

The date format field has a link extensively describing the format which you can use, and the letters make general sense (except for the g, but that's because h is 24-hour; and i, for minutes (m is for month)). It's much better to allow people to customize exactly the way they want their date format than lock them into several options.

I'll disagree with that. Maybe I'm stupid or something but I couldn't figure out for the life of me which timezone was mine. And we have kids coming to this forum...most of which I doubt are going to be able to just figure it out...I'd like to see something implimented where the names at least are shown (Eastern, Central, Mountain)...

Yes, it's extensivly described but I still don't have a scooby how to work it. I think both hacks would be a great idea. And like Bno has already said, Dates For Humans? NO! THE NEOBOARDS HAVE TAKEN OVER PPT!!!

Hm. I though that you could just go "Hmm... the time appears five hours behind. I must be in GMT + 5 rather than GMT...". Anyhow, I was wrong in thinking so.

GMT (UTC) is the international point of reference, so you should know your offset from it anyway.


Er... pick a letter with the desired meaning, and insert it where you want it in the textbox?

For reference, if you need to know what time zone you're in, double click on your on-screen clock, and when the adjust window opens, read whatever it says in the drop down window for time zone. It'll tell you your zone in relation to GMT, as well as it's common name (example: I'm -6 GMT & Central time).
An easier point of reference for some people, would be to go by Neopian Standard Time. Most people know how many hours ahead or behind NST they are, and NST is -8 GMT, so if you're three hours ahead of NST, you're -5 GMT, or in the Eastern time zone.

Well, those MODs are very simple to install, though. They won't slow down the forum in any way, will they? And see, two members or more implied that they would like these MODs installed and agree with my view-point, I believe. I believe that these members who've expressed their agreement for the installation of these MODs are only a fraction of the total number of people.

I agree. It's more or less an issue of convenience, though, so it's not a huge deal either way.

I realized that, with the Dates For Humans modification, you can add as many combinations as you want in addition to those provided, so you wouldn't have to worry about one's preference not being available in there.
