Meh thankies for all the replies...but the problem is the teacher is forcing us to only take instruments that can be used in band and he's also restricting the number of people that can play one instrument...evilness i say!

Also, if we want to pick drums he wants us to learn a whole set of other instruments with it...then he said that if we can't handle all of the instruments at once...he can take away some.

At first i wanted to play the flute and then the teacher started talking about how some people, how no matter how hard they'd try they wouldn't be able to play it because of the way their lips are shaped?

I've never heard of that before. Everyone is different and one method might not work for another. Not everyone plays the flute the same way. I mean I've seen people with fairly big lips do quite well on instruments with small mouthpieces. People just naturally find a way to work around things like that.

Would you mind providing a list of what instruments are allowed? I'm not familiar with band, and different places may differ as well. Please forgive me if this sounds daft, as I have only had experience with orchestras and not bands.

I'd suggest you first cross off anything that you definitely cannot see yourself doing. I would not play a cello, for example, because it's huge. Nor would I play any large instrument (apart from the piano or keyboard) as I wouldn't be able to support it.

Then remove those that would require a lot of knowledge to play. Violins aren't something a person can take up easily.

You will probably be left with things you don't mind doing and will not be difficult to learn. Then pick the instruments that seem to be ones you would like to learn afresh, or may be suitable to your skills.

The only ones I know similar to the piano are the keyboard, the xylophone and the glockenspiel. I did quite well on the latter two when I was younger and picked it up with ease. It was like playing on the keys of a piano, only my "fingers" were little sticks, so to speak. I really liked it. I have always wanted to learn the flute though. Ah well, can't have everything.

Anyway, hope you can choose something you'll like.

Usually it's just winds and percussion. No strings.

is it just band? no strings? Well, then again, learning the violin when you're in grade 9 CAN be a challenge, although you'll have the advantage of piano, which is actually pretty big, but yeah, still hard. There's always bass XDD

I find that clarinet, flute, and sax are often overplayed (as was mentioned) but oboe might not be too bad^_^ french horn? I guess it depends on what you want as in parts. French Horn doesn't always get a major part, I've heard, but I'm afraid I'm not sure about oboe. Precussion is cool, I love drums, but not everything in precussion, which is why I have not thought about joining band.

If I knew any of the band insturments better, I would suggest more, but I'm afraid I'm a strings person, o.O;;;

My boyfriend used to play horn. It really depends on the piece. He's had some really awesome parts to be envious of even if they are not melody.

But if you have to a march or a piece that is more light and bouncy...all you have is *upbeat* *upbeat* *upbeat* on and on to counter the *downbeat* *downbeat* *downbeat* in the basses. He hates that so much.

One thing I like about horns is that I think it's a real "the more, the merrier" kind of instrument. I think that sound is so much better when you have a group of them playing rather then just one.

Flutes are sometimes overpalyed,I agree.
Oboes sound like ducks sometimes yes,but as you get more advanced they sound better,same with clarenets(sp?)
Saxaphones are overplayed sometimes too,I'd like to learn it as well,but I can't right now. Trumpets,well they can have overpowering sound and you have to get used to the fingerings.And French Horn,well there's so many notes for one fingering.It all depends on how much effort you want to put into it

Violin all the way man, if you have to choose a actual annoing band insturment go Baratone, did I mention that both of these insturments I played.

I'd say either a sax or a clarinet.

Oboe is a difficult instrument which barely anyone plays, but definatley quite unique.I myself play flute and alto sax.Flute well once you figure out how to make a sound by putting air through correctly and how to adjust that air for different (higher and lower) notes your fine but it can be quite difficult to.Saxophone on the other hand is one of the easiest to get a sound from though lower notes are harder.And yes it can be overpowering alot of tht time depending how many people you have playing it.Also I've been told that acoustic guitar is just like the piano in a different format...yes I can also play acoustic a bit, but not very well yet.

Do you like woodwinds/brasses/percussion first, then its easier to pick which instrument you like. The clarinet and flute is nice. I play the clarinet for 2 years, violin's really really nice but its a wind band. Oboe, hmm... if you can't play it well it sounds horrid, but when you've mastered it, its beautiful, it has many solo's too. You can try listening to 'Persis Overture' there is a oboe solo, see if you like the sound. Tell me if you want to listen to the recording I'll post it.

I suggest the saxophone, or the alto saxophone. ^_^
