That is just awful. I know today that it was upgraded from an 8.9 to a 9.0 and I find that rather scary as thats the second strongest earthquake I've ever heard of (The first being the earthquake in 1960. It was a 9.5!). I think it's awful about what happened. I hope there is a fund set up to help the people who have been affected as I want to help out.

They think a few of the smaller off shore islands have completely dissapeared. Which wouldn't shock me.
An earthquake hit Santorini (Greece) and a whole massive part of the island fell into the ocean. *shrugs*

death toll well into the 60,000's.
scarily enough its nothing compared to some earthqaukes and tsunamis that have occured in the past (prehistoric in talking here).

the reason they had little warning (3 hours i think it was, certainly not enough time to do anything involving a tsunami) is because it is extremely rare for any major seismic event to occure of that way (they usually occure to the west of india) and so no detectors had been installed.

I can't believe 60,000 people are dead. 60,000! That's like a small country!

They really need to take some of the millions donated for relief and invest in a decent detection system. There is no reason why that many people had to die.

It is so sad there are many people still out there lost under the rubble and families are worried sick that they cant find them. It is so sad it breaks my heart that these families dont know where their loved ones are and the ones they have lost.

So much of this year has been terribly sad for my family. This year my family went from having a nice home to having nothing living in our van for a week was hard to pass off to the kids (yup we are still camping) But everything got better…we went north and so much better we are now here I sit on my pillows typing on my computer and I am happy to hear sleepy sounds from my 3 little ones in their room. But none of that compares to the disaster so many of us just see on the news. It is an unimaginable terror for too many to bear. My heart really goes out to them. In my small way I will do what I can to help out. I hope some of you can too.

The number of dead from Sunday's Indian Ocean killer waves is likely to rise above 100,000, the Red Cross has said.

Senior agency official Peter Rees said he thought the toll would rise sharply when victims are counted on India's remote Andaman and Nicobar islands.

Almost 77,000 people have so far been confirmed dead.

US President George W Bush pledged to set up an international coalition, with Australia, India and Japan, to co-ordinate the relief effort.

The US earlier said it was more than doubling its pledge of funds to the region to $35m.

The 9.0 magnitude quake happened just off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early on Sunday, setting off waves that smashed into coastlines as far away as Africa.

Considering that the areas affected don't have fantastic census records and the like, and there are just so many islands and villages, I'm estimating 250000. New Zealand is also searching for about 450 unaccounteds and Australia has about 5000.

You're probabaly right on the money..

Canada has confirmed three deaths, but Thai Officials are saying that there are a possibility of 36 more.

---

My main query is on whether the death count is relative to the people missing.

Are you serious? My God.

What the hell went wrong? This is the 21st century, I thought we were above Mother Nature by now!

Not to sound bad or anything, but it's times like this I'm really thankful I live in north Texas. The only natural disaster we have to worry about are tornadoes, and while intimidating they're short-lived and only a tiny fraction as damaging as all-encompassing disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, tsunamis, and floods. The tropics are gorgeous, but there's a few thorns with that rose...
