Here's an idea: many popular video games/computer games/movies today are incredibly violent and almost as realistic as real life. You can point out that violence is still a popular form of entertainment today, and the only reason why we do less of it live is because we are able to simulate it so well.

You can also talk about bullfighting, boxing, and the new reality shows that often put people into dangerous and extreme conditions. It's a little controversial, but you might also mention the television converage of wars, crimes, and other types of violence.

I just spent an hour typing up notes for this. Test tomorrow.

Uses of oxygen.

Fuel for space rockets.
For hospital patients or astronauts to breathe.
Production of steel.

Extracting oxygen from the air? Easy. *flicks back in book*

Preparation and Properties of Oxygen

Hydrogen Peroxide = Water + Oxygen

· Catalytic decomposition reaction.
· This reaction is catalytic because it requires a catalyst to produce the oxygen quickly.
· This reaction is a decomposition reaction because the hydrogen peroxide is breaking down to produce two (or more) particles.
· This reaction uses the catalyst manganese (IV) oxide. The catalyst is a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction. But the catalyst is not permanently altered are used up during the reaction. The catalyst also does not alter the products produced or the amounts.

When hydrogen peroxide is added to the manganese (IV) oxide, bubbles form in the water. We do not collect these first bubbles as “oxygen” because it is mainly air (and only 21% of air is oxygen). This would mean that we would collect all the other gases in the air as well as oxygen. Instead, we wait until the only substance left is oxygen. We allow air to be pushed through the top of the gas jar, and then collect the pure oxygen made.

Replace equals with an arrow.

You should find something in there. :)

Oh, and Starchaser, thanks! *hugs* Greatest points ever. :D

I think that you can condense the whole of the air, and then run off the various other elements. I'm not sure though. It's how the get argon anyway, so why not use it to get oxygen :P

Well, it seems i need your help. For English, we have to write dialogues or plays for two audiences. The situtation is that i accidently stole something from a store. It was an honest mistake. I have to write a play with me explaining to a friend and a store clerk.
My style is to write one thing, and then one completely random other thing. Now, talking to the clerk, i'll use my random excuse that i'm a monk, devout christian so i'd never do that.
I just need a real idea to explain to my friend. Anyone want to help?

*blinks* I'm doing Dimensional Analysis in math currently. It's nothing exceedingly hard, and I can do the really easy inches --> feet and meters ---> kilometers etc, but...I'm having trouble with the only-slightly-more-difficult ones. Which bothers me because normally math is easy for me, but for some reason I just can't wrap my mind around it.

For example, some of the problems on tonight's homework:

500mm^2 = ?cm^2 (I think I got that one right, not sure)

840in^2 = ?ft^2

2km^2 = ?mm^2

Those are just a few examples of the problems. I don't want the answers, I could find those easily enough with an online conversion thing, but I just...don't get it. I know that to get feet to inches you multiply by 12 and to get 2ft^2 to ?in^2, you have to do 12 x 12 x 2, etc, but I don't know why and as a result I can't apply it to other problems. I want to understand it, not know how to do the easy ones and then get lost on the harder ones.

Someone help? o_O

I'm guessing what you want help on is why in order to get something like 2ft^2 to ?in^2 you'd have to do 12x12x2. Right? I'll build on that.

You know how in each foot you got 12 inches, right? So if you have 12 sq. inches in a row you've got something like this:

@@@@@@@@@@@@

right? That also is a foot, right? So a sq. foot looks something like this then:

@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@@@

Because that's so complicated and has too many @s in it, let's make that big giant thing equal this:

+

So now our sq. inch looks like @ and our sq. foot looks like + even though that's actually twelve @s by twelve more @s.

Now if you have ++ (2 sq. feet, yes?) then you've got two of those big giant 12x12 @s next to each other.

You've got 12x12x2. The 12x12 comes from the fact you've got 12 inches in a foot and another 12 inches in a foot and then two such squares next to each other.

So for something like mm^2 to cm^2. You have a 1 sq. mm thing that looks like @ and a 1 sq. mm that looks something like:

@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@
@@@@@@@@@@

That's 100 mm, right? 10x10, yes? 100. Let's make a sq. cm an + now that we know what it looks like.

So if we know that something like that is 100 sq mm. Then we can figure out how big 500 sq. mm is. That looks like +++++ right? Because there's five 100s in 500.

So if you know how many sq. inches are in a sq. foot or sq. mm in a sq. cm or something like that, you can figure it all out. But that's because we know the definition of a square foot is a square with side length 1 foot by 1 foot. And because 1 foot = 12 inches, that square also equals 12 inches by 12 inches.

Then if you want to do things with bigger units and smaller units (ie: meters and mm), figure out what it would be with units in between instead. So using that example (meters and mm), we start by knowing a sq. mm looks like @ and a sq. cm looks like 10 @s by 10 @s, or a +. And because we know that a meter has 100 centimeters, we can put 100 +s in a row by +s in a row (that probably won't fit here). And we'll have a square meter. But that doesn't solve the problem of how many sq. mm there are in a sq. meter yet, does it? So we go on.

Let's take a single row of that sq. meter. We've then got 100 +s in a row. How many mms can go across it then? Well, if a + is actually 10 @s, we can do 100x10 (100+ times 10@) and get 1000. So now we know there's 1000 mm in 1 meter. We can then go on and do 1000 mm x 1000 mm to get how many sq mms are in a sq m. That's 1000000 sq mm in 1 sq m. You can go onto even bigger things if you wanted to, but I'll stop at that point.

Don't feel afraid to draw pictures all over your math textbook or whatever you happen to be using. I do it all the time even though I'm not supposed to. And people before me have, which means that some things are in pen, some things are so erased you can't see it. If you happen to be one of those people who have the luck of having pictures in your textbook, copy them onto another piece of paper if you're afraid of writing on the book by just laying a piece of paper over it. Trust me, work with drawings. It makes life easier. Or if you're someone like me, work with @s and +s.

And if you're still confused, draw pictures! Lots of pictures. Squares! Those aren't too hard to draw (unless you're trying to make them perfect). I hope I helped clear things up rather than confuse...

If you happen to want to know the answers to your problems there, highlight the following:
Quote:
500mm^2 = 5cm^2
840in^2 = 5 5/6 ft^2 or 5.83 with a bar over the 3 or 35/6
2km^2 = 20,000,000mm^2

Iced - Silver [dot] Net ... now go. And maybe someday I'll actually get up something that resembles a pretty sig.

There's an even easier way...

Just cool the air. The various elements that make up air liquify at different temperatures. By slowly cooling a sample of air, the nitrogen, argon, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and other trace chemicals will all liquify, and the liquids to be collected can be altered simply by changing the temperature.

For an example that involves heating a liquid to get the constituent products, you should look up how oil refineries work. The keyword is "distillation."

EDIT: Another method of getting oxygen from air, which is neither simple nor safe:
Collect a sample of air, and place within that sample a supply of hydrogen gas.
Ignite the hydrogen.
2H2 + O2 -> H20.

Collect the water that is produced. If this is a closed system, the water vapor from the reaction will condense on the walls of the container in which it occurs. Allow that to drip down the sides of the container into a drip pan.

Electrical currents break water up into hydrogen and oxygen - this is called electrolysis. Use electrolysis to separate the hydrogen and oxygen, and you have pure oxygen, as well as a hydrogen supply which you can reintroduce to your air sample to collect more oxygen.

*flops* Okay. We have a song that we have to have a discussion about in English in a couple days, it's basically for practice understanding metaphor, but the language in this is really obscure and political, and if you don't live in the US you might not get it. Even though I live in the US and I don't get it o_O It's an Ani Difranco song...and it's very politically charged and I'm not asking you to agree or disagree with it (because that would probably start an argument), I just need to FIGURE OUT WHAT SHE'S SAYING. help!

So, for example..I think the Pavlov part is talking about conditioned responses, and 'hits me with bad news every time I answer the phone' is every time we respond to the ring expecting good news we get bad news but keep coming back...but I'm still not sure. And as a note, even if you help explain just one or two stanzas, it would help me so much. Thank you :)

Oh, and some of the big words confuse me too. Like, "A defacto choice of macro-microcosmic melancholy" I translated to "actual choice of very big-(the idea of humans as the epitome of the universe) state of black sadness." Which makes no sense at all.

defiance. when pavlov rings- the dogs come. but she doesn't like what he's calling her for, so she just "lets it ring". as for pavlov himself, and taking from her syl,e this is society/patriarchy. most likely society and the news in this case.

corruptions. can't trust either party, plus they're all the same- democraNs and republicraTs. it's intentionally mispelled. you can't trust big companies, either. "goons" gives off the impression that these globalized people are undeserving and stupid.

uncle tom is the subject of the book Unlce Tom's Cabin, which is about slaves. klan=kkk. the kkk and black people don't mix too well. oval office=white house. so: the white house (ie politics) is white-dominated, and there's corruption ("photo-op" of uncle tom. plus the slaves and kkk thing).
uncle sam is that american symbol. he's cheating in cockfights in the 'land of opportunity'- how fair is that? (not very). america is falling apart into corruption and greed.
knife in her back- treachery.

unrepentantly self-centered and unfair
people with the power of suggestion are the reporters in the 2nd line. theyre the wrong people- they arent asking any questions. "causation" means to cause something. so just by asking why, that's oversimplifying the issue. asking that "why" question is still better (as i understand) than acting like youre the only one there and you know it so everything is ok. oversimplification is better than selfishness.

enter all suckers scrambling for the truth

the "suckers" are the people out looking for themselves in all the wrong places. they're coming in to replace the older kind of people. "momma" no longer matters- she has no more authority and say.

she refers to the fact that "girl power" is so overcommercialized in music and the media. the "tools" are singing, music- talent. they will never be so bold as to bring down the house (she uses a hip-hop expression here to continue with the previous line)
nd just let it ring,

did my best... it's really long. i love it.
