according to my extremely (freakishly) smart friend, pyramid schemes are illegal in the US. just something i'd like to throw in

Aren't they illegal worldwide? Or at least in most countries? I'm pretty sure they're illegal in Australia.

They are - most places. That doesn't stop people/companies from doing them anyway. I can think of a few right now that are pyramid schemes getting people to sign up to be "distributors" of certain products - then those people are supposed to sign up more people. The ones at the top of the pyramid are the ones who profit 9 times out of 10 - everyone else loses out, gets scammed, ends up spending alot of money on useless stuff.

I don't click any of those "free" anything ads - I assume they're some sort of scam. To me, a pyramid scheme IS a scam.
