I'm in a class called Global Studies, which is basically geography for honours students. My teacher never gives graded homework, we just have tests on each unit. We have 8 tests throughout the year, which means that if we fail one of them, we'll probably get a B in the class.

Also, just for some background information, there is a boy in my class who thinks he's all that. We'll call him Jim (:P). Now, Jim is very annoying and likes to bug me, so, naturally, I hate him. It's pretty much obvious if you look at the two of us that we don't like each other.

Finally, back to the tests. There is a boy in my Spanish class who had Global Studies earlier in the year (because it's a 9-week class). He kept all his tests and wrote down the answers to them. He typed up all the answers on a little slip of paper and gave it to Jim (they're all multiple-choice). Jim passes the paper around to all his friends in my class so they can copy the answers down. My teacher is fairly young (in her thirties), although she has bad eyesight, so she doesn't notice them doing it. About 2/3 of the class (around twenty or so) have the answers by the time we take the test. They all cheat and get the answers correct, and they all get perfect grades, which they brag about, even though everyone knows they cheat, except my teacher, who is oblivious to it.

Well, on Friday, we took a test on Latin America. I noticed that Jim had carelessly dropped his answer slip when he got up from taking the test (his desk is right next to mine) so I picked it up. He didn't seem to notice. At the end of class, when the bell rang, I paused a little to wait until Jim was out of the room. I walked up to the teacher and gave her the paper. I told her that Jim had been cheating on the tests we have had so far. I would have told her about the other people cheating, but the warning bell had rung, so I had to hurry out of the classroom.

I came back at the end of the day to talk to her more, but she was gone because on Fridays, teachers can leave right when the last bell rings. I'm scared that, because she knows I dislike Jim, she might think I'm trying to frame him. After all, isn't it weird that I found that slip of paper that Jim carelessly dropped? Could she think I was the one cheating? And, if she does think that I was telling the truth, could Jim and his friends find out? Jim is on the basketball team, so he has a lot of friends, who could make my life Hell. I'm a bit worried about what will happen tomorrow, Monday, when I go back to class.

I hope what's ethical was also sensible...

Well, the only instance in which I can see the teacher thinking it was you that was cheating was if all your marks were perfect/very good and Jim's not very good. But from what I've seen on here you seem like a good person and if the teacher also sees this side of you then she probably won't jump to conclusions about you trying to frame Jim and such.

If you are worried about Jim finding out you could go talk to the teacher and explain to her why you don't want Jim to know it was you, and if the teacher is decent enough they won't tell Jim (which they probably wouldn't anyway, that would be pretty unsensitive).

Teahcers are supposed to keep whoever gave them information about cheating and similar situations annonymous. So, Jim may not bug you since he's not certain it was you. Either way, it'll still be worth a bloody nose or two to watch him and some of his friends fail the class.

If the teacher can clearly see that Jim is cocky, but doesn't presume that you're the type of person that would actually Frame another person, then I'd say you're in the clear.

Can you remember specifically what you said to the teacher? That's really all that matters. She'll keep you anonymous aslong as you made sure that she viewed the class as being cheated out of their education by this Jim character.

I find it usually best to stay out of ethical deliema such as this, as you've got yourself in a tight squeeze. There are otherways to get out of it, but with a concious like mine, it'd eat you alive. For example, if you and Jim have a common friend, and that particular kid happened to be a part of this, the teacher would know right away that you're not framing anyone, since no one would rat their friend out like that(well, atleast publically).

When dealing with teachers, always think about your anonimity, it's your best weapon when reporting people who break rules.

o_0, does your teacher have voice mail by any chance? If so, I would call the school and leave a message with her telling her exactly what you told us. And, emphasize that you don't want your name given out for fear of retaliation.

You probably should go to the principal with this one--just in case the teacher does something that isn't quite bright. You might also want to do this because it ultimately affects your class standing. Particularly if the teacher grades the tests on a curve (I don't know if they still do that, but when I was in high school, some teachers gave A's only to the top 5% of the class--even if everyone scored 90% or higher). It really isn't fair that your class standing is lowered because a bunch of your classmates decided to cheat.
