Being Polish in background makes me very biased and I have to inform you that Polish is your best choice of language :

Well, if you can understand good Polish, not only can you speak and understand Polish, but you can also understand Czech and Russian to a degree as well.

Of course, Japanse would be a good choice. As would Italian, French, Chinese and Spanish.

If you can speak English, Spanish and French, you go practically anywhere in the world.

Japanese is good only if you are an anime or Japan fan, IMO.

Not to mention that qanda is a Chinese. (Our mother language pwns!)

I'd go with Spanish if you're in the US, because it's very widely spoken and one of the most useful second languages to have. As others said, it can help your understanding of other languages as well. =)

I will said take the language that is more widely use. Japanese is mainly a language for the Japanese. Chinese is a language use by China, Taiwan, Hong Kong (Cantonese), Malaysia, & Singapore. Even in Japan, they uses some Chinese character which mostly mean the same thing but pronouned differently.

I will recommend Chinese.

For myself, I wish to learn Malay as a language which I think it will be widely use too. But I am too lazy. :P

Spanish (not including other Romance languages) is known in much more countries than that. -nod- Even in Guinea Equatorial, in Africa, Spanish is main. :P Also, I may be biased, too, because I'm from Spain and I live in Florida, where Spanish is very useful and can raise your salary quite a bit. :P

Bah, Japanese is easy, too. I went to Japan for a month on an exchange student program and grasped the language fairly quickly. However, due to not using it, I've forgotten it all, mostly. :P

I highly recommend Chinese. It will be the most useful. However, I might be biased seeing as I am Chinese and I speak it If you do take Chinese, take Mandarin. Yes, it will be very difficult. And depending on your teacher, it can be just difficult to insane. This is mostly because it's quite different from western language systems and the tonal pronounciations can be quite challenging. Hell, it's even challenging to native speakers! And Chinese is one of the only languages still using ideogrammatic system with word signs and not a phonetic system (Japanese and Korean use a mix of both). However, if you have a good teacher that goes at a good pace, it shouldn't be too bad.

:D I remember once, we were reading this incredibly boring book in English class aloud (the teacher read it to us) and he made us take notes he dictated. I was the only one not to fall asleep, so at the end of class, everyone asked me for the notes.

I gave them the paper.

Needless to say, they failed the test we had on it the next day because they couldn't read Latin. :)

Spanish will probably be easier to learn and it's pretty similar to English. And if you live in the U.S., it's widely spoken and a great second language to learn.

Chinese - well, if you plan on visiting China anytime soon... :P

I live in Canada, but I think, for now, that I'm probably going to go with Spanish... (Or Latin... argh.) I'm still doing French in school (for all eternity, it seems) and I can continue with my Japanese at home (I've got a really useless kit and some good tutorial sites). Also, when I get into grade 9 (couple years down the road... gah...) I can always take a fourth language XD (Which will be German, my school doesn't... DO Chinese). And then, I can do a fifth language if I can convince my mother. 'Twill be Japanese.
I thank all you people greatly for your much needed help!
*Worships*
You guys give uncannily good advice.
I'll become a linguist if I take that many languages. O.o

Oh come on, if you take German you'll be able to understand German, Dutch and because it's so similar to French in terms of rules you'll be able to pick it up quite easily, not to mention you can use it in Germany, Luxemburg (Probably spelt wrong, don't kill me), Switzerland, Holland and a lot of the bordering countries to Germany. Ireland is a good place you'll find people that speak German too...

Plus you can come to New Zealand and we can speak German (Huzzah!)

Well, you obviously already know English, and you've taken French, so Spanish shouldn't be too hard to learn. I took Spanish, and I dabbled in French, but I found French much harder to learn.
Take Spanish =D

^.^ go do something completely different, go learn Zulu. It could come in handy one day!

And if you dont, and for some reason your plane crashes in Africa and you are taken hostage by some Zulus and you need to speak to them, i hope to be there to say *i told you so* and get thrown into the cooking pot with you ^.^

I'd say take Spanish, the language is even much easier to learn than French and you will be able to use it in the US as well as in a lot of other countries. Of course, more people in the world do speak Mandarin (sp) but seeing most of them live in China anyhow, it might be more useful to stick with Spanish. Same goes for Japanese.
As far as the blatant German promoting I'd be inclined to say no... the grammar is quite difficult and even though the language is spoken more or less within Europe in a lot of countries (at least people will be able to understand it) it is not so much outside of Europe. Plus, 60 years after, it STILL is frowned upon strange enough. (explanation : I work as an international claims adjuster, contacting insurance companies all over Europe. For most countries that I do not speak the language of (mainly eastern European), I start in English, even though I am fluent in German. They will answer me in German most of the time, and we continue in German. Would I start in German, I will not even get a response, half of the time. No, I have nothing against Germans or Germany, it just works that way, STILL. So, basically you do not need German, and with Spanish I think you will gain quite a lot of understanding, also for Latin and Italian, Portugese (sp?) etc, since these languages are all Romance languages.

That said, you could of course go learn Zulu... sometimes something that seems to be so far of the bog standard, can actually give you a big advantage... you never know.
