Ugh, Florida is just hurricane frenzy to begin with. My aunt lives there and she had to evacuate her house for a week or so. (Don't know if it was Ivan, I don't remember names of Hurricanes.)

Hey, why do Hurricanes have names in the first place? And who decides on what name it will be?

There's a big list of names for each year, me thinks. And once the name is used 5(?) times in all, it is then 'retired'.

I heard that for depressions or whatever they are called are named after a person that the majority of people don't like. And for good weather fronts they choose people who are well liked by the majority.

Well that's odd.
I just wanted to know who has this grand power to name a weather pattern, and if it's a personal thing. Like, Hurricane Deborah (!?) after the guy's ex-wife, or something like that.

*ahem* Anyway, I hope we don't have any hurricanes this year in NJ! We hardly ever do, but you never know. The last thing I need is for my roof to fly off and land in someone's backyard eight miles away.

Six hurricane name lists exist, each with a name for each letter of the alphabet, except for Q, U, X, Y, and Z. A different list is used each year, and the lists are recycled and reused (last year's list will be used again in 2010). If a hurricane is extremely devestating, the name is retired and replaced with a different name. For example, Andrew was retired and replaced with Alex. The names on the lists go male, female, male, on even years, and female, male, female on odd years. There are different lists different regions/oceans. I'm mainly referring to Atlantic hurricanes here.

They invented search engines for a reason folks ;P

It aint called the information superhighway for nothing.

There aren't hurricanes here in Alberta. Only Tornados. I hate Tornados... they frigthen me. Too much force, too unpredictable, not enough warning... bleh.

I knew that!

It's amazing what random, useless facts get stuck in your brain. Why doesn't that happen with schoolwork?!

Anyway, nope, no hurricanes in Melbourne :)

Except for the bad hurricanes last year, because I THINK Francis was retired after year 2.

My poor grandma. She went to New Jersey during Francis. XD

Well we've never had a hurricane in England but I was in Florida the day before hurricane George hit a few years back. We flew right over it. :P

Hooray for the Charley-esque paranoia to come!

We have. I've forgot when. I think it was 1989... but I'm not sure...
