We're moving house on thursday. We have 4 hours to get everything out of this house and into the new one, it's not going to be nice!! Its because we rent student houses, and our contract for this one ends on thursday night, and we have to give the old landlord the keys to this house by 10pm when his shop closes, but we can't get the keys to the new house until 6pm from the new landlord. its going to be erm... interesting!!

So, does anyone have any moving tips? or any stories from when they moved?

Best advice I can give is make sure you have everything organised, packed, stacked, bagged, etc before 6pm rolls around that way you'll be able to just pick chunks of possesions up all at once. I'd probably also suggest moving all the heavy stuff first, you might be tired by the end of it so its best to get the really exhausting items out of the way (that being said, small nick-nacks might drive you mad). Also, if you're transferring everything by car and you've got a lot of big items consider sticking small non-breakable items between them, it helps to take as much as possible. In my bedroom before the removal people came, out of the boxes. It had a gate too :D

My advice is down another path. As you pack, you might find things you don't ever use and probably will just lie around. These things are called "clutter". I dumped a lot of this before my family moved from Hawaii, minimizing my possessions to less than anyone else in the family. It made unpacking easy, too.

i've got loads of clutter. i've tried throwing stuff away, but i've still got a lot of stuff.
i've got a lot of things i cant get rid of. i have *counts* 3 suitcases, 2 overnight bags, and a big holdall of clothes. but one whole suitcase is all coats, and one is all shoes and boots (stuffed with socks). but i cant get rid of all of them. and i have 3 boxes just of uni notes, and then another one of text books.
i've done most of my packing now, i just have a few bits and pieces left to do, and my computer, which isnt coming apart until thursday.

scratch the comment on shoes, i have a whole suitcase of shoes, pluse one of those big fold out boxes... too many i'm sure :S

i've been moving my stuff into one of the empty bedrooms as i've been packing it, i have soooo much more stuff than i had 2 years ago when i came over here from oz :S i'm gonna take a photo to compare

Tis scary. here's a photo of all the stuff i had 2 years ago: (its fuzzy coz its a photo of a photo)

Here's what i have now, excluding an awful lot of stuff, including:
all my kitchen stuff (plates, cutlery, pans etc etc), bedding (3 duvets, 3 pillows), a bedside table thingy with 4 drawers - all full, the blue chest thing in the top left of the before photo, my cello, my computer and its various bits, my tv and dvd player, a bookcase, and a cd player.

You can put miscellaneous clutter in those drawers from your desk and chest...just take the drawers out, move the furniture's frame into the moving van, load the drawers up with stuff, and put them into the frame again. Reverse in your new place.

Make sure that you can fit all of your stuff into the van you've chosen to move your stuff in - otherwise, you're doomed. The longest part of the moving day is loading and unloading, and the more you have to do it, the more you'll hate it.

And, finally - next time, start your new lease one week before ending your old one ;)

the furniture isnt mine, its a student house so it come furnished. and that also explains why we have no overlap with the leases. the student contracts around here come as standard 1st july-30th june. they're a fixed year length, so you can't have any overlap.

oh and we dont have a van, we have 4 cars.

i have way to much clutter (still not unpacked two boxes, four years after moving...)
moved into the smaleest room in thr house (the bathroom is bigger, just shaped oddly!)
anyway, managed to get all but the aformentioned two boxes in.
good good, considering how big my old room was.
i have recently moved into the larger bedroom.
most of my stuff wouldnt fit, and another box was put into the attic.
still trying to work that out myself to be honest.

When I moved, I just had lots of egg cartons full of stuff. (It was easy to get a hold of them, since my mom works at a supermarket.) Anyway, it was great because I threw out everything I didn't need, put everything I didn't want anymore into my dad's closet and had lots of room for more things. :)
The hardest part about moving is finding where to put everything to get how you want it to be. Plus, your new house may not feel like yours. It takes a while to get used to, but after a few months it gets better.

I suggest having all 4 cars fully packed by 5 pm. Then place anything still to be moved by the door that is closest to the cars. Then drive to the new place, unpack, drive back, repack and so on until it is all moved.

Worse comes to worse, if you still have stuff to move at 9:30 pm, just move it outside of the house and have one or two people guard it while another person runs the key to the old landlord. Then come back and pack the cars.

Couple more things:
-Find out if you have to leave the place in a clean state in order to get a security deposit back. Lot of landlords require that. If that is the case, leave one person behind at the old house with a broom, garbage bags, and cleaning products while the others are moving stuff to the new house.

-And make sure that you have electricity at the new house on the day you are moving in. It would not be good to be moving in the late evening with no electricity to guide you. Just in case, keep a flashlight or two handy.

-Ask friends to help move. And offer to pay them with beer and pizza once you finish moving. That always worked for me!!!

-And, if you are on good terms with the old landlord, ask him if he would be willing to give you a few hours extension. Explain the 4 hour window of time that you have and ask if he can help you out by letting you keep the key until the morning. Because, it is pretty doubtful that he will be having people moving in at 10 pm.

-Finally, and this is most important. It is really helpful, if you have a lot of junk, to mark the outside of the boxes with what is inside and what room it is to go into. Whenever I move, I take a magic marker to the side and top of the box and state what is inside and in which room it belongs. Then the person moving it knows to put it in the kitchen/bedroom/bathroom. Also, pack one box with all of the stuff you will need right away--toothbrush, change of clothes, pillow, coffee maker. And, make sure that you move that box yourself, if at all possible--so you know exactly where it is when you get into your new place.
